Teaching Tool
Using the Teaching Tool you created in Module/Week 1, go a little deeper as you share your teaching tool with the class. Hopefully this DB will become a reservoir of philosophy information for you, increasing your understanding, and pointing you to good sources for your other assignments.
1. Select "Reply" to the appropriate philosophy thread (the one you were assigned) .
The starter threads should be titled as follows:
Reply here to post your Neo-Scholasticism/ Thomism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Perennialism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Pragmatism/Progressivism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Essentialism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Behaviorism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Existentialism/ Postmodernism Teaching Tool
Reply here to post your Reconstructionism/Critical Pedagogy Teaching Tool
2. Attach your teaching tool file.
3. Choose ONE of the following options to address in your 250 word post:
Compare and contrast your assigned philosophy with biblical principles, giving examples of how your philosophy aligns with Scripture, and examples of how it stands opposed to Scripture.
Consider the answers your assigned philosophy gives for the basic questions of philosophy, such as: Metaphysics = What is reality/truth? Epistemology = Is it possible to know reality/truth? If so, how? Axiology = What values should be developed in education? What is beautiful? Learner’s Nature = What is the human condition? Good? Bad? Neutral? What learner factors should be considered in education? Teacher’s Role = What is the most effective approach the teacher should take? Curricular Focus = What content is most important? Methodology = What pedagogical strategies are most effective?
How does your assigned philosophy "fit" you? What do you feel comfortable with and what do you not? Give details. What are the criticisms of this philosophy? What do opponents of this philosophy/theory say?
Replies: View as many teaching tools as you have time for. Reflect and respond to 2 classmates’ threads, using a minimum of 100 words. Consider their accompanying post and give constructive feedback, extending the conversation by adding a new insight, or offering an alternative way of looking at it. Do not simply say, "I agree or I liked your work", rather say, "you made me think of...., your ideas are supported by the text or the Bible ..., have you considered that... this philosophy seems..."

Historical Christian Purpose of Education
Do some research to find historic evidence of the early days of American education’s purpose. Search the Internet using key words such as education, Christian, American history coupled with some of these institutions, names, and books. You may use these, but they are primarily examples. If a link has already been posted, please search for another one. First come, first served.

Thread: Write two paragraphs, totaling at least 250 words.
1. Share the link to the information you found with an APA reference.
2. Write the first paragraph summarizing what you discovered regarding the historical purpose of education in the U.S.
3. Write the second paragraph, expressing what you think the purpose of education, the “why” of education should be. You may draft your own statement or you may choose one of these to get you started: I believe that the purpose of education is..., School and learning are important because..., Education is a good thing because..., Individuals and society benefit from education because... Do not write about "how" education should be conducted. Don't write about "why you believe" what you believe. Write about what you believe. No citations are needed for this second paragraph, you'll use them in your replies.
Replies: Consider the thoughts of your classmates, compare and contrast what they believe with the philosophers we've studied. Which philosophy do they seem to align with? How are they alike and how are they different? Give at least one citation and reference per reply.

MCEE and SCRIP Applied to a Case Study
Case Study: Steven Smith was employed by the Avon School District as a high school English Language Arts teacher. He posted three photos of his students’ writing on Facebook, highlighting their grammar gaffes and misspellings. He also commented on the mistakes.
Smith’s posts weren’t shared publicly on the social media site, but a customized group of his Facebook friends could see the photos. Someone who thought his posts were inappropriate for a school teacher did not contact Smith but did contact the local newspaper about the photos and comments. The school district’s central office received an anonymous tip about the teacher, his posts, and the forthcoming newspaper article.
Thread:
1. Write a minimum of 250 words for your initial thread.
2. In the first paragraph, consider either the perspective of the teacher, a parent, the administrator, or a student. What would they likely say about the news release and the actions of the teacher?
3. In your second paragraph, discuss which dispositions (SCRIP), ethical standards (MCEE), and/or Biblical principles were violated or upheld. Include at least one specific example from one of these categories and remember to use citations and references to support your work.
Replies: Do you think that your fellow student gave a believable script for their chosen role? How so, or how not? Continue the conversation related to SCRIP, MCEE, or Biblical principles as it relates to this scenario. Contribute a new thought to the conversation.
