Writing Assignment 1: Source Summary (GRADED)
Overview: Writing Assignments
Complete this writing assignment by Week 1, Day 7.
Writing assignments in this course include a source summary (Module 1), a comparison and contrast of two sources (Module 2), an explanatory synthesis paper outline (Module 3), an explanatory synthesis paper draft (Module 4), and a final version of an explanatory synthesis paper (Module 5). Each of the writing assignments builds on the skills learned in previous writing assignments, activities, and learning material.
Writing Assignment 1 Prompt
Your writing assignment is to craft a 250-350 word source summary. As you've learned in this module, a source summary contains the following key elements:
an introduction to the source
an introduction to the topic
an overview of the source's main argument
an overview of the source's supporting points
an overview of the evidence used to demonstrate and substantiate the supporting points and main argument
in-text and reference citations in APA format
Your job, then, is to choose one source from the Topics and Sources page (we encourage you to use the same source you used in the Activities and Discussion this module) and to write a short summary essay of the source, one that includes information on all of the elements listed above.
Use your source summary outline and answer the following guiding questions to craft all of the elements required for your Writing Assignment 1: Source Summary. Your responses to these questions will be combined into one document that will become the draft of Writing Assignment 1.

You can refresh your memory as to how to write a source summary at any time by reviewing the tutorial video on source summary.
You can also use the APA citation wizard below (click on the tab to open up the wizard) if you are using a source different from the source you selected in Activity 1 or if you simply want to generate the citation rather than copy and paste it from the document you created in AcWrriting Assignment 2: Comparison and Contrast Paper (GRADED)
Complete this writing assignment by Week 2, Day 7.
Overview
In Writing Assignment 1, you learned how to summarize a source by looking closely at its rhetorical strategies. You also learned how to use the APA citation wizard to implement properly APA formatted citations for referenced source material. You should also consider the instructor feedback you received on Writing Assignment 1. Use your instructor feedback to maximize your potential in Writing Assignment 2.
Writing Assignment 2 Prompt
For Writing Assignment 2, you will write a 350-500 word comparison and contrast paper on two sources from the Topics and Sources page. We encourage you to use the same sources you worked with in the Activities in this module, since those Activities were planned with this Writing Assignment in mind. Activity 4, where you created Venn diagrams that compare and contrast two sources, laid the groundwork for Writing Assignment 2, so using the same sources you used in Activity 4 capitalizes on the work you've already done.
The questions below will help you draft your paper by asking to you construct one paragraph at a time and then download a Word document that will combine the paragraphs together into a single paper.
You may use either a point-by-point or a topic-by-topic organizational strategy, but your comparison and contrast paper MUST include all of the elements below:
A discussion of the similarities in two sources on the same topic
address similarities in the main argument they present on the same topic
address similarities in the types of examples and evidence they use to support EITHER their supporting points OR their counterarguments
A discussion of the differences between two sources on the same topic
address differences in the main argument they present on the same topic
address similarities in the types of examples and evidence they use to support EITHER their supporting points OR their counterarguments
Clear, illustrative examples from each source to help the reader better understand the similarities and differences between the two sources
Both in-text and reference citations in APA format for all referenced source summarized, paraphrased, and quoted material, using the APA citation wizard
An objective, third person perspective. Your comparison and contrast paper must be written in third person.
Use the skills you learned in the Activities in this module and in Writing Assignment 1 to craft your comparison and contrast paper.

1. After selecting an organization pattern for your paper (point-by-point or topic-by-topic), write a comparison and contrast introduction paragraph.
In the textbox below, write your comparison and contrast introduction paragraph. Remember to:
introduce the topic addressed by both sources and to provide enough context about the topic to orient your reader
provide a forecasting thesis statement that makes it clear what you will be comparing and contrasting in these two sources (similarities and differences in main argument and types of evidence EITHER in the supporting points OR the counterarguments)
IMPORTANT REMINDERS: As you summarize or quote the source, be sure to make it clear that the idea or language is the author's and include an in-text citation for any summarized or quoted material. Also, avoid first person perspective (I, me, mine, our, we) and only use third person perspective.
BE SURE TO CLICK "SAVE" so your work is saved to your Notebook for later retrieval. You can access your Notebook at any time under "Tools" at the top of the left-hand navigation bar.
