Welcome to Week 4 of Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health!

Last week, we learned about individual health behavior theories and how those theories can be applied to public health issues and interventions. We looked at the differences between theories as well as the benefits and challenges associated with those theories. We selected specific individual health behavior theories and explained why those theories applied to certain public health concerns.

In this week, we will research social, cultural, and environmental theories that are used to explain the behaviors associated with public health issues. Some examples of these theories are the Social Ecological Model (SEM), the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI). We will identify the different components of each theory and discuss how the components work together to provide guidance for addressing those behaviors. Lastly, we will apply two of the theories to a selected public health issue and examine the overall impact.

Application of Theory—Community

Now that you are familiar with public health issues and the application of theory, you will apply the social, cultural, and environmental theories to the second public health issue that you discussed in Week 1 Project.

Task

Select and apply two social, cultural, or environmental theories to that issue. Identify at least two theories or frameworks that can be used to explain your public health issue. Write a 5- to 7-page paper in which you examine the theories and apply them to the topic. In your paper:

• Explain how each theory or framework applies to your topic.
• Provide at least two literature based examples for each theory or framework.

• On a separate page, cite all sources according to APA format.
• Submit your response as a Microsoft Word document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.
