COUN 6753 week 4 Discussion
Discussion: Putting Ethics into Practice
Ethical practice represents the foundation for all licensed or credentialed counselors and school counselors. In career development, common ethical issues include the following:
- careful and culturally appropriate selection, evaluation, and interpretation of career assessment interventions;
- cautious use of interventions newly available due to technological advances, for example, Internet-based distance counseling and career information;
- and general limitations surrounding practices within one’s area of training and competence.
This Discussion will focus your attention on these issues through review and application of the ethical standards from the NCDA, which are dedicated to career counseling.
To Prepare:
- Review the NCDA Ethical Standards found in this week’s Learning Resources. https://www.ncda.org/aws/NCDA/asset_manager/get_file/3395
- Access the “Career Ethics in Practice: Four Case Studies” located in the Week 4 Learning Resources. Select the case study most closely aligned with your area of specialization. As you review the case study, consider how you as a counselor would ethically work with this client/student, including any multicultural or social change considerations.
- Select at least two NCDA standards you think are most relevant to the case, considering how these standards are relevant.
Post the following:
- A brief summary of the case study you selected
- A description of how you would ethically work with this client/student
- The NCDA ethical standards you believe are relevant to the case as well as any multicultural or social change considerations, identifying the specific standards and how they apply
- These are the Case Studies (ONLY CHOOSE ) As you review the case study, consider how you as a counselor would ethically work with this client/student, including any multicultural or social change considerations.
Week 4 Discussion: Career Ethics in Practice
Four Case Studies
This Week’s Discussion explores ethical and legal issues in career counseling. From the examples provided below, select the case study most closely aligned with your area of specialization. As you review the case study, consider how you as a counselor would ethically work with this client/student, including any multicultural or social change considerations. Then, select at least two NCDA standards that are most relevant to the case, considering how these standards are relevant. By Day 3, post a brief summary of the case study you selected and a description of how you would ethically work with this client/student, identifying the specific standards and how they apply, as well as multicultural or social change considerations.
The Case of Steven:
Steven is a 42-year-old man who was mandated to career counseling after being placed on probation for a weapons charge. Steven is pessimistic about his chances of finding gainful employment with a felony record and does not believe that career counseling will be useful. Additionally, due to Steven’s lack of employment, he has limited financial resources and worries about being able to afford career services. However, Steven realizes that if he does not fulfill the requirements of his probation and receive career counseling, he will be sent back to prison. Steven feels hopeless and does not know what to do.
The Case of Juliette
Juliette is a high school senior who is undecided about her postsecondary options. Over the past 3 weeks, she and her school counselor have completed several career assessments and are in the process of reviewing career options that may be a good match given Juliette’s current interests. Juliette reports to the school counselor that she would like to join the military but is concerned about discrimination toward members of the LGBT community. Juliette’s school counselor was previously unaware of Juliette’s LGBT identity. The school counselor has religious beliefs that are not compatible with LGBT lifestyles. She recognizes that these beliefs may interfere with her ability to be non-judgmental when working with Juliette and would like to transfer Juliette to another school counselor.
The Case of Jasmine
Jasmine is a 25-year-old administrative assistant who is considering a career change. She has had four sessions of career counseling with a licensed professional counselor but continues to experience a significant amount of anxiety. Juliette has been to her primary care physician seeking medication; however, the physician will not give Jasmine a prescription without a diagnosis from a licensed mental health professional. Although they have only explored career issues, Jasmine has asked her counselor to provide this diagnosis to her doctor so that she can start medication.
The Case of Willow Bay Elementary School
The school counselor at Willow Bay Elementary School is planning to implement groups to introduce 5th grade students to various careers. As part of the groups, the school counselor is planning to have various professionals come to the school to give presentations, as well as lead job shadows in the community. The school counselor is considering organizing these groups by student performance in various subjects such as math, science, writing, etc., believing that grouping students according to academic performance in various subject areas will make the groups more meaningful and increase interest for the students.
