The grade for your flyers and peer feedback will take place in Waypoint. Your grade will reflect the quality of your flyers, content, and the depth of your responses. This discussion forum will be assessed on a 10-point scale and is worth 10% of your final grade. The flyers are worth 9 points (including your initial discussion post with your flyers and Waypoint Submission) and replies to classmates is worth 1 point total. Refer to the Grading Rubric under the Week 4 - Discussion Forum 2 Submission page for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Understanding Memory by Creating Community Educational Resources (Peer Feedback) [WLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4] [CLOs: 1, 4, 5, 6]

As a reminder, your initial discussion post, with your presentation, and Waypoint submission is due on Day 5 (Saturday). You have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

  • Read Chapter 7: Learning and Memory from Neuroscience Online, Chapter 18: Learning and Memory from the Nervous System in Action, and the article, The Neuroanatomical, Neurophysiological and Psychological Basis of Memory: Current Models and Their Origins.

  • For recommended sources, you may enjoy How Reliable Is Your Memory?this memory lecture The Neuroscience of Learning and Memory and The Seven Sins of Memory.

Introduction

For this discussion, you will complete the required readings on memory topics, identify one community or audience who you think would most benefit from learning more about memory, create one educational flyer for that audience, and explain your choice of topics to classmates. Secondly, you will identify your choice of a possible final presentation topic and discuss it with classmates.

Instructions

To complete this discussion forum, follow these steps outlined in the tabs below:

Discussion Post Requirements

  • In your main post, first, explain your choice of memory topics, audience, and what you want your readers to gain from the flyer.

    • Make sure you attach your flyers as a single document to your discussion post.
  • Second, please list and explain your choice of a possible final presentation topic. Make these as narrow and focused as possible.

Helpful Resources

  • You will share the electronic version of your flyers with classmates by attaching it to your discussion and then commenting on your peers’ flyers. For information and tips on creating or designing flyers, use the internet to look up “medical and health care flyers brochures” and “flyer design tips” or other similar search terms. See the following examples and adapt them as needed to be adequately informative.
  • Use the resource 10 Creative Ways to Make a Flyer That Stands Out for its example 10 design tips.
  • Use the resource Cool Flyer Design Ideas: 50 Examples You Can Learn From for its examples of 50 flyer covers.
  • Microsoft Word also has flyer templates and look at Medical Brochure Templates .

Flyer Content Requirements

  • Choose ONE of the suggested topics below:
    • What is human memory?
    • How can people enhance their memory?
    • What are normal errors or limits of memory?
    • What are diseases or disorders of memory? You could also choose to explain the symptoms, causes, and treatments of a neurological disorder of your choice.
    • How could you apply learning and memory research in the workplace?
    • Or pick a memory-related topic of your choice.
  • Have at least three clearly identified main points, either on the front page of the flyer or distributed throughout the flyer as looks best.
    • These points should clearly connect to how the information on memory benefits the reader or target audience.
  • For each main point, have a section of follow-up text that provides additional scholarly information and detail about that topic, including in-text citations.
  • In general, the flyer should have at least one page of text (about 250–500 words) to provide detail on the main ideas it highlihgts. The other half of the flyer’s total space can be devoted to attention-getting graphics or other layout and design elements.
  • Include a list of additional resources that your audience could use to learn more about the chosen topics.

Guiding Questions

As you are preparing your flyers, these guiding questions may help you:

  • What do you want the audience to know about your chosen topics?
  • How will this information benefit them?
  • Where can they find additional information if the flyer interests them?

Flyer Design Requirements

You can use a tool of your choice to create your flyers: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Canva, or other software.  Please make sure the final file is in MS Word, PowerPoint, or PDF format.

  • Each flyer will have the equivalent of the following two general pages:
    • A front page (1) designed to attract attention and provide an overview of the information presented. Use attention-getting images, colors, or other graphics. This may not require much text.
    • A back page (2) that details the information highlighted on page 1. This should be the equivalent of one page of text either single or double spaced, depending on how much detail supports your points (about 250–500 words).
  • Alternatively, you could create different layouts that fulfill the requirements above (having simple points and attention-getting graphics for half of the flyer’s total space and more detailed text for the other half). For example, trifold flyers can have mixed content, therefore combining specific points and attention-getting details with more detailed follow-up text on a single panel.
    • Whichever specific flyer design you create, it must have the equivalent of the attention-getting front page and a more detailed back page.
    • The flyer can have any general text formatting of your choice.
    • However, each flyer must include in-text citations and complete references formatted in APA 7th edition as outlined in the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper
    • You must support the information in your flyers with at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed, credible sources. (See Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources)
  • Combine your flyers into a two-page-MS Word, PowerPoint, or PDF document that you will attach to your discussion post and submit to Waypoint. Text must appear as text, not an image, so that screen readers and waypoint are able to read the text.

Additional Formatting Tips

  • Use effective layouts and headings that make the information easy to follow and read.
  • Consider the color scheme of your flyers so that critical information is easily visible.
  • Consider the font, font size, and font color; your flyers should be easy to read.

Guided Response

Respond to at least two peers by Day 7 of the week. At least one response should be to a peer who selected topics different than yours. Each response to a classmate must be at least 150 words. Responses may include

  • constructive feedback on the design of their flyers, content, and clarity;
  • sharing ideas about your possible final presentation topic; and
  • looking up and summarizing new information your classmates might appreciate.

You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful and interactive discourse in this discussion forum. Continue to monitor the discussion forum through Day 7 (Monday), and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.
