You cannot simply Google your sources (nor use any other web browsers). This is because when you google something, you end up finding links to unreliable sources. Anyone can write and post anything on the web. How would you know the person who posted the information on the web is an expert who can competently talk about your topic? How would you know the information is accurate? As a professional counselor, you need to know how to search for and use information from reputable sources. This assignment gives you the opportunity to develop graduate-level research skills.

Self-help books are not appropriate for this type of paper. Self-help books are written for a lay audience. As a professional counselor, you need to be reading books and journal articles written for professional counselors and other mental health professionals.

You can use the Corey textbook as one of your references. This means you need to search for and review another 9 sources to write this paper (this is the minimum; you can search for more if you want).

You need to search for at least 10 references dated between the years 2007 and 2022. You can include older references if you want, but they must be in addition to the 10 required references.

Journal articles and books that can be used as sources of information for this paper should be searched through the NSU Alvin Sherman Library. You can come to the library in person to do the search, or you can do the search online, from wherever you are. Here is a link to the library webpage: http://sherman.library.nova.edu/(Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

If you need help figuring out how to do a literature search through the NSU library, know that NSU has a team of librarians ready to assist you, and you can reach them in several different ways. You can talk to them in person, via phone, online chat, online video, or even use text messages for quick questions. I strongly suggest you make an appointment to have your own reserved time with a librarian to go over all different ways you can find appropriate sources for this paper. Know that journal articles and professional books are indexed in different databases, and some databases are more relevant than others for research in counseling and psychology. The database that is most relevant for this paper is PsychINFO. Here is a link to all databases for psychology and other behavioral sciences to which NSU gives you access. http://sherman.library.nova.edu/e-library/index.php?action=subject&col=n&cat=psy(Links to an external site.) Regarding the paper itself, some students asked me what’s the difference between “Views of Normal/Abnormal Behavior" and "Assessment of Normal/Abnormal Behavior". These are two areas you need to cover in the paper, so I agree it is important that you understand the difference. Viewing has to do with theory and assessinghas to do with practice. How counselors view the nature of normal/abnormal behavior (theory) has an impact on how they assess for the said normal/abnormal behavior (practice). For example, one might say that behaviorists view abnormal behavior as learned behavior which can be unlearned through the proper application of several known learning principles, such as classical and operant conditioning. And how do behavior therapists assess for abnormal behavior? One way is to do a thorough analysis of all environmental factors that are maintaining the behavior (functional behavior analysis). This is just a quick example. You would, of course, elaborate on this if you were writing about behaviorism.

Some students have asked “where the literature review should go in the paper.” The paper itself is a literature review. In contrast to a reflection paper or other types of papers you’ve written for class, a literature review is a type of paper that summarizes and integrates information from different sources found in the professional literature. To write a literature review paper, you need to first gather reliable sources of information on your topic, read them, understand/digest the information you gathered, and them write your impressions. You also need to reference your sources throughout the entire paper (talk about who said what, and cite them in APA format after you make a statement to show where you got that information), and you also need to list in the references page at the end of the paper all sources you cited throughout the paper. Note that you should not list in the references page all sources you read; just those you cited in the paper.

Know that you can include a couple of short quotes in your paper if you like; but you are expected to not rely heavily on quotes to convey your ideas. Quote no more than once or twice in the entire paper. If you do use a couple of quotes, make sure you know how to appropriately format them in APA style. Using someone else’s words without giving them proper credit is plagiarism, and papers containing plagiarized content from any source (e.g., articles, books, webpages, blogs) will receive zero credit.
