Analyze and discuss how the three Ps could be considered interrelated characteristics.

Can you think of other consequences of the three Ps that are not discussed in the textbook?

Environmental Health Hot Topics

Compile and present five of today's most pressing environmental health issues and explain why you selected each of these five items.

What might be the short-term and long-term environmental effects of these five hot topics?

How might each of their risks be assessed?

Environmental Policy

Evaluate what is meant by the term environmental policy.

In addition, research two examples of specific environmental policies that have been developed in the United States within the past 40 years that have a direct and/or indirect impact on population health.

How are these policies being monitored and/or implemented throughout the country at both the governmental and local levels?

Vulnerable Populations

Establish why children are more vulnerable to environmental toxins than adults.

Identify any other vulnerable populations at the local, national, and international levels.

From public and environmental health perspectives, what types of policies are needed to protect vulnerable populations from environmental hazards?

Zoonotic Diseases

Select and conduct public health research on a zoonotic and/or vector-borne disease.

Present an overview of your findings, including a summary of the disease (symptoms, diagnosis, etc), how it is transferred, treatment options and prognosis, statistical data on prevalence, and/or general locations.

DDT

Discuss some of the concerns that led to the banning of DDT in the United States and other developed countries.

Do you believe that the hazards associated with DDT outweigh the pesticide's benefits?

You will participate in one discussion this week. There are two different topics presented below, in bolded text. Please choose one of these topics for your discussion this week, address the bullet items under the topic name.

Ionizing Versus Nonionizing Radiation

Discuss the risks and benefits to society associated with the use of devices that produce radiation (ionizing and nonionizing), and the similarities and differences between ionizing and nonionizing radiation, including examples and how each one is measured.

What are the health effects of each one, and when does exposure cross from acceptable to unacceptable levels?

Radioisotopes

Present an explanation of radioisotopes and then discuss the risks and benefits associated with them.

From an environmental health perspective, what are the medical uses of radioisotopes, and what safety measures, if any, might healthcare workers use in their environment with themselves and patients?

Are there any other population concerns and safety measures needed?

The Air We Breathe

Differentiate specific examples of respiratory complications that may develop secondary to smoke exposure, secondary smoke, and/or asthmatic irritants.

Air Pollution

Analyze specific examples of how air pollution endangers human health.

Include in your discussion a review of the short- and long-term health effects of air pollution.

Describe the categories of hazards that may be present in foods, including obesogens.

Discuss some methods for hazard control and/or prevention, along with which agency or regulatory body would oversee this aspect of food safety.

Water Supply

Describe the principal reserves for water using specific resources and/or data.

Which areas of the world have adequate supplies, and which ones are facing a chronic shortage?

What are the public health implications of both situations?

Unintentional Injuries

Describe what is meant by disparities in the occurrence of unintentional injuries.

Give some examples from the global and domestic (U.S.) perspectives.

How do you account for these disparities? Be sure to link them to environmental factors in your discussion.

Occupational Injuries

Describe at least two of the most common occupational illnesses (as opposed to injuries found in private industry) and include current, relevant statistics for a specific geographical region (county, state, and/or national).

Also discuss the causal factors for these conditions.
