PowerPoint Summary (40 points)

OBJECTIVE: To create a comprehensive summary of a specific art movement or period using illustrations, analysis, and research.

You are the chief curator of a successful art museum. So successful, in fact, that you can have any art object in the world loaned to you at your request. Your director has charged you to create a show of between 10 and 15 objects. Then, create a virtual exhibit using PowerPoint. Choose either a specific period or topic from the course material that exemplifies the main points needed for an understanding of a period or topic of your choice. You may use the artworks we have studied but you are not limited to those featured in the textbook.

In addition to choosing your artwork, you have to explain why the objects are significant. You can choose paintings, sculptures, tapestries, ceramics, coins…the sky’s the limit! Have fun with this one -- think about what types of things you would want to see when you walk into a museum. For example, will the objects all be in glass cases or will they be interactive? Is your exhibit geared towards a specific age group? Is it outdoors or indoors? These are just some things to think about. Get creative with this assignment!

Requirements:

· Your show must have a title (think of something catchy)

· Your presentation should begin with a clear thesis and organization of ideas focused on a specific period or topic covered in our course (From prehistoric to 14th century).

· 10-15 objects/artworks must be included, identified properly with each object’s name/title, author (if known), date, and medium.

· A brief paragraph or two about each object and its significance (similar to a label at a museum). (This information must be on the slide itself and not in the notes section). Remember, you must tell me why the object is worthy of being in your exhibit!!

· Works cited/bibliography on the final slide

This is a research project for which you should be prepared to visit a library and/or make use of CSM’s Proquest database. Do not wait until the last minute to begin your research, as you may need to contact a reference librarian for assistance! Guidelines regarding plagiarism still apply...be sure your thoughts and observations are your own, or fully credited! Preparing a PowerPoint Summary involves a different approach from the other assignments in the course. It is an opportunity to use computer techniques, design skills, and visual communication.

It is important to use specific examples of works of art within the style to support your ideas.

This paper, while your opinion, must reflect an understanding of the reading about the period you choose. Explain the stylistic influences and its legacy. Discuss the political, cultural, historical, or environmental impact on the artists. Consider the typical iconographical choices of artist during the period and the interpretation associated with them.
