Read each of the two documents linked to below.  Each one provides reasons as to why they, the French and then the Germans, need to have colonies.

Write two paragraphs that put these documents into the context of Europeans’ views on imperialism in the late nineteenth century.

Consider addressing the following questions in your response:

What are their shared goals?   Which goals are different? Why?  What is the tone of these documents? What do these documents tell us about Europeans’ mentalities regarding imperial conquest?
