ORGANIC 2 DISCUSSION

1

Your Name: Antioxidants typically don’t normally involve a typical 2 electron oxidation mechanism that you might expect. What antioxidants typically do is quench free radicals that form in your body. 1. Investigate and draw the structure (and provide the name) for 3 common antioxidants that are

commonly consumed and write a detailed description of how these antioxidants work. Then, provide a mechanism clearly illustrating how one of the antioxidants works.

2. Radical (mono)halogenation can also be useful in synthesis as well. Using the carbon sources provided below and any necessary reaction that has been covered in Chapter 10 as well as previous chapters in the text, propose a synthesis of the alkyne product shown below. Show all necessary steps and include the reagents/conditions needed for each step. Draw the major organic product expected after each step as well. Remember, you must use the carbon sources provided and these carbons need to be incorporated into the product shown. You do not need to draw arrow-pushing mechanism for ANY of the steps. To help you with the forward synthesis, also design a viable retrosynthetic scheme that illustrate the key bond disconnects you will utilize in your proposed synthesis.
