Evidence can range from trace evidence collected at the scene to testimony of persons who were not at the scene, but are familiar with the daily actions of victims and suspects.

DNA is contained in human cells. DNA—Nucleotides—determine a person's characteristics. Because the sequencing of nucleotides is distinct for every individual, the DNA analysis or DNA typing helps in the identification of an individual. The information for the identification of an individual can be extracted from even small samples of biological material—a single strand of hair or a blood drop.

You are a rookie crime scene investigator. You have been called to investigate a home invasion in which the perpetrator broke into a house and assaulted the resident, who was home alone.

After the attack, the victim called 911. The paramedics arrived to transport her via ambulance to the hospital. Before slipping into unconsciousness, she made a statement to the paramedics that she had cut the assailant with a kitchen knife before he ran away. She did not remember what happened to her during the attack.

The victim is now in coma in a local hospital.

During the processing of the scene, you locate the following:

A bloody baseball bat on the living room wooden floor.

A bloody handprint on the wall (covered in wall paper) next to the patio door.

A blood trail ending with a blood drop on the cement in the parking lot.

Your supervisor asks you to make a presentation to the chief of police and top city officials about what happened at the crime scene.

Create a presentation of no more than 10- to 15-slides in Microsoft PowerPoint. In your presentation, include the following:

Explain the purpose of crime scene photographs and sketches to document the evidentiary items.

Describe type of DNA analysis, most appropriate for these situations.

Explain the techniques of blood samples collection from the three surfaces described above.

If the blood was already dry at the time of collecting the samples, describe the techniques used to collect the samples.

Describe the possible contamination that can take place for each sample, and explain its consequences. Also explain the packaging techniques for the samples to avoid such contamination.
