The film clip you are about to see is from the “King’s Speech”, the true story of King George VI on his quest to find his voice. He must overcome his stammer and also realize the power of language as he delivers a speech to millions of listeners. This is one of the most important speeches of all time as he prepares his subjects for war against Nazi Germany. As you view this clip, what do you see in King George’s face as he struggles not to stammer? What do you see in the faces of others as he uses his “voice”? Also think about yourself facing such a challenge and the impact of language in the way people perceive us. Go to the first link on page 129, “On the Screen: The King’s Speech” which is the movie trailer. You can see the actual speech by going to end of the inset and click on the link at the end.
