Q1) As I indicated in the first presentation, ideally healthcare organizations should embrace a HR philosophy rather than a personnel philosophy of its workforce. However, many healthcare organizations are faced with significant challenges in reducing costs, greater patient demands for their services and difficulty attaining and retaining healthcare providers in many areas. These challenges can result in a highly stressful work environment with low employee morale. From a HR perspective what three recommendations would you have for a healthcare organization to create a work environment that characterizes a HR philosophy in relation to the above mentioned challenges? Make sure you number each recommendation. (25 pts)

Q2)

2) A medical group that consists of 30 doctors has a clearly defined, albeit questionable in spots, approach to hiring physicians.  [Step 1] Appropriately the medical group first eliminates all applicants that do not possess the medical degree and licensing required by the state for the open position. [Step 2] Next, applicants will be subject to a phone interview. The phone interview begins with confirming the applicant's interest in the position and confirming their education and experience from his/her resume. If during this initial part of the phone interview the applicant sounds "foreign" in any way, the phone interview will include open-ended generic questions (e.g., Why do you want to work here?) to assess their oral communication skills. If the applicant however sounds like a native English-speaker the phone interview ends right after their credentials are confirmed and the applicant's availability for an interview is determined. [Step 3] Those applicants that make it through the phone interview are brought in for a face-to-face interview. At the interview the medical group wants their physicians to be the symbol of health and vitality. Applicants that appear to be vibrant, youthful and fit move on to the final step.  Those applicants that appear to be frail, weak, physically impaired or clearly overweight are rejected.  [Step 4] Lastly, the CEO will take the remaining applicants on his boat for an afternoon fishing trip. Based upon how they act on this trip (e.g., how many fish he/she catches, tell some interesting hunting/fishing stories) he will offer a job to any applicant that he believes will fit in nicely with the other doctors.

a) Based upon the above story, identify ONE disparate treatment concern you would have with this hiring process. Which step in the hiring process are you referring to? Explain why you think this step may result in a disparate treatment claim. What protected characteristic or group may be affected?

b) Based upon the above story, identify ONE disparate impact concern you would have with this hiring process. Which step in the hiring process are you referring to? Explain why you think this step may result in a disparate impact claim. What protected characteristic or group may be affected?

Q3) Modern Orthodontic Services (MOS) has four locations throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. At each location MOS has two orthodontists, a manager, six orthodontic assistants, two receptionists and a billing clerk. MOS is planning to expand over the next two years by adding three locations in New Jersey. Do you think MOS should recruit internally or externally to staff these new locations with orthodontists? Do not select both. Present the pros and cons of your choice. Based upon your choice, which TWO recruiting methods would you recommend for recruiting orthodontists? Why? (25 pts)

Q4) You've been given the task of hiring a dentist. As you know, there are numerous selection methods available. If money and time were not a concern and you have a large pool of applicants to pick from, which THREE selection methods would you use to hire a dentist? Defend your three choices. Make sure you clearly identify the pros and cons of your choices. Lastly, how would you evaluate the success of your selection approach? (25 pts)
