Module 1 Discussion
Injuries
Injuries have a major impact on the body. Select an example of a common injury, research it, and then discuss the areas of the body that would be impacted. Include terms such as directional terms, cavities, and/or planes. Provide some theories and arguments for ways that this injury might impact aspects of a person’s life outside of the initial anatomical issues.

Module 3 Discussion
Space and Bone Loss
When astronauts first started going to space, we noticed that they would come back to earth with significant bone loss. This seemed to correlate with how long they had been in space. Discuss reasons for why this may happen, and what might be done to alleviate bone loss in this situation.

Module 4 Discussion
Joints and Movements
We have learned about joints and movement. This week, pick a specific joint in the human body (knee, elbow, etc.), research it, and discuss why this type of joint is ideal for that part of the body. Discuss some reasons why it might not be ideal.

Module 5 Discussion
Effects of Aging on Skeletal Muscle
Research the effects of aging on skeletal muscle. Pick one effect and discuss why it happens and what you think a person might be able to do, if there is anything, to delay this effect.

Module 6 Discussion
White Matter Growth
As brains mature, the white matter in the cerebrum grows. Watch the very short (6 second) video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnm8f76zx0g (Links to an external site.)
This shows brain development from about 5 years of age through about 20 years of age. It comes from MRI images. We can see, based on this video, that the amount of gray matter diminishes and the amount of white matter grows throughout development.
Discuss this growth and what it means. Also, if brains are still developing at 20 years of age, discuss your feelings on teenage behavior and choice-making. Are teen brains fully developed?

Module 7 Discussion
Sensations in the Body
Think of a specific sensation that you might notice on a part of your body. Write about this sensation and discuss how you feel this sensation. Then, trace the probable sensory pathway. Why is it important that you can feel this sensation?

Choose an Activity that Involves Movement of the Hands and Arms
Writing Assignment:
We have learned how important muscles are to movement. Choose an activity that involves movement of the hands and arms. This can be something like shooting a basketball, driving a car, or hitting a tennis ball with a tennis racket. Write about the activity and what muscles of the hand and arm are used. Name each muscle. Describe how these muscles move. If these muscles functioned differently or were not there at all, come up with a way this activity may have to be done differently.

Muscles and Movement
Writing Assignment:
Let’s continue thinking about the muscles and movement you wrote about in the previous module. Now, let’s zoom in and you can write about how the muscles contract and move on a smaller scale.
Using the same activity you wrote about in Module 4, write about the neuromuscular junction. Name the structures and their functions. Describe muscle neurons, muscle fibers, and how all of these create the movements needed for the activity.
