Discussion 4
Gender Portrayal in Media
For this module's discussion, I want to encourage you all to take a look at how gender is portrayed in the media and how children might be influenced in various developmental aspects as a result (e.g. Disney movies, TV shows, commercials,... etc). For instance, awhile back, there was a picture that went viral on the internet of a little girl dressed as a nurse with a boy who dressed as a doctor and people calling it sexist. In this discussion, I would like for EACH of you to find
1. SPECIFIC examples of how gender is portrayed in various media (Find at least 2 or more);
2. how it might influence children's perception of gender, gender roles and how they express/identify themselves at various age (e.g. age 2, 5, 10 vs. adulthood)
3. what do you think happens when children do not necessarily fit the stereotypes or norms of their sex/gender?
4. what do you think is the best way for parents to approach a child if they do not conform to traditional and stereotypical gender roles and expression and WHY?
Initial post (no more than 300 words) due by Friday and
Respond to at least two colleagues' post by Sunday
Final tip for a successful and effective post or response includes an original idea that is backed up by theory and empirical data whenever appropriate, and contributes to the overall discussion beyond what has already been said!
