7.4 - Discussion: Leadership as Work
1919 unread replies.3636 replies.
When facing a problem, it is human nature to focus on the negative and try to blame individuals, groups, or circumstances. True leaders recognize this and become solution oriented. In The Road Less Traveled, author M. Scott Peck states, "If I am not the problem, there is no solution." How true.

There are two parts to this activity.

Part One:

Read and complete the exercise, Leadership at Work: Future Thinking, at the end of Chapter 13. Challenge yourself and apply a real problem in your life when doing this exercise. You do not need to give the details of the problem, just answer the questions with earnest honesty.

In Part One of this exercise, summarize the problem on paper and then answer the following questions:

  1. Why do I have this problem?
  2. Who/what caused this problem?
  3. What stands in the way of a solution?
  4. How likely is it that I'll solve this problem?

(Use 300-500 words for each part of this activity.)

Now complete the second set of questions addressing the same problem. When answering the second set of questions, notice the different approach. Envision incorporating this type of focused thinking in everyday life. Can you do it? If you do not think automatically, try it. It is more difficult in action than it appears on paper.

In Part Two, summarize what you are feeling about the problem after completing the first set of questions. The answers the second set of questions listed below:

  1. What do I really want instead of this problem? (Your answer equals your desired future outcome.)
  2. How will I know I've achieved this future outcome? (What will I see, hear, and feel?)
  3. What resources do I need to pursue this future outcome?
  4. What is the first step I can take to achieve this outcome?
  5. Last question...what are you feeling about the problem now?

Post your responses to the discussion early in the module week. Your responses should be a minimum of 300 words, grammatically sound, and free of spelling errors. Review your peers' responses and comment on two posts that particularly interest to you.
