Overview

Complete the required Coaching Questionnaire and create three SMART goals using one copy of the required SMART Goal Worksheet for each goal (both linked in the Resources of this assessment).

The assessments in this course must be completed in sequence.

Establishing SMART goals is a reflexive practice that helps a person think critically about assumptions and values and puts the focus on what he or she wants to accomplish, personally or professionally.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 3: Create a personal development plan.
  1. three specific SMART goals.
  2. how to measure the successful completion of each SMART goal.
  3. how to determine if each goal is achievable.
  4. the steps required to attain each goal.
  5. the timeline to track the status of each goal.

 

Content

This assessment is an opportunity for you to select three goals that are important to you, either personally or professionally. Goals should align to our core values and be the driving force that provides motivation to help us achieve our vision. Without goals, we run the risk of wandering aimlessly and never achieving what is important to us. You will continue to build upon these goals in the next two assessments; but more importantly, you will use them to move forward in your personal and professional pursuits.

As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration, and they do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

  • What beliefs do you have about yourself, and how do those beliefs affect your personal development?
  • What does it mean to be critically reflexive?
  • What does authenticity in leadership mean to you?

 

Assignment Instruction

Preparation

In this course, you will have a coach to support you in your process of leadership development.

First, schedule a one-hour coaching appointment at capella.peoplegrove.com. Follow the prompts to schedule a 1-1 coaching call with one of three leadership coaches.

Complete the Coaching Questionnaire (provided in the Required Resources) and email it to the coach of your choice, before your scheduled session. Please contact your instructor if you have any questions on the coaching connection.

Instructions

For this assessment, complete three worksheets (one for each goal), ensuring that each goal is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Use the SMART Goals Worksheet (provided in the Required Resources).

  • Specific: Describe the three goals in the first box of the template ensuring that they are specific.
  1. exactly should you be doing to achieve the goal?
  1. Describe how you will measure the successful completion of each of the three goals.
  1. will you know when the goals have been completed?
  2. will you track your progress?
  3. Describe how you know each of the three goals is attainable.
  4. is going to help you with your goals?
  5. Describe the steps needed to achieve each of the three goals.
  6. skills and resources do you need to achieve each of your three goals?
  7. Describe the timeline that you will use to track the status of each of your three goals.
  8. are the specific dates or time periods you will use as a checkpoint for each of your goals?

You will continue to build upon these SMART goals in your assessments after receiving feedback from your instructor and your coach.

You do not need to use APA formatting for this assessment. Your assessment submission should consist of three pages only—a single worksheet for each of the three goals you have identified. You do not need to write a paper or submit any other documentation for this assessment.

Submit your goal sheets as Word documents to the assessment area and send a copy to the coach you selected, prior to your session.
