Business Model Canvas Project

Guidance & Instructions

Completing this course requires you to design and present a business model canvas. There are two tasks for you to accomplish in this project: (1) create a business model canvas (BMC) and present your work online. Each of these parts is worth 50 points. The project is due in the last week of the course. I suggest you work on it each week.

Now, let’s not make this complicated nor overthink it. A business model canvas (BMC) is not a business plan. A business plan is much more detailed and complete. You might think of the BMC as an elaborate sketch of the business that indicates how the company will create, deliver, and capture value. The BMC is made up of nine building blocks, and those building blocks are what you will develop in your course project.

I expect you to use PowerPoint to present your BMC project at the end of the term. Your slide deck should have 11 slides. One slide will be a title, and nine slides for content, with the remaining slide to conclude your presentation. Each of the nine content slides will present one of the building blocks of your BMC. I don’t want you to develop slides that are complicated and wordy. Your objective is to present your business idea or analysis of an existing business simply and straightforwardly. Let’s review your guidelines for this project.

· You are limited to 11 slides in your slide deck.

· You must use PowerPoint.

· Your presentation can be the BMC of a business you would like to start (hopefully to change the world), or you can examine an existing small business and develop a BMC.

· The title slide should have your name, the course name & number, and the title of your presentation.

· Each of the following nine slides should be one of the building blocks. Use the following order:

· Value Proposition (VP)

· Customer Segments (CS)

· Customer Relationships (CR)

· Channels (CH)

· Revenue Streams (RS)

· Key Resources (KR)

· Key Activities (KA)

· Key Partnerships (KP)

· Cost Structure (CS)

· The eleventh slide concludes the presentation.

· Provided below is an example of the nine content slides.

This is an example of a correctly formatted content slide. The slide used is the blank slide with a Title. You will put the name of the building block in the slide title. Your content will be placed in a text box. Use this format for each of the building block slides.

Your title slide should look like this example. The title slide should provide your name, the course number and title, and the business's name.

The ending slide of your presentation should appear just like the example below. Your name, the course number, the course name, and the name of the business. Your slides should look like these examples. Don’t waste your time with colored backgrounds or trying to make the slides “pretty” or “catchy.” That is for another time. We are concerned only with developing and presenting quality content.

Assignment FAQ’s

· Can this assignment be late? No, late projects will not be accepted and will not be graded.

· Do I have to follow the format you provide? I have some ideas on how I want the presentation to look. Failure to follow the design will result in losing points (see rubric). This project emphasizes solid and well-thought-out content, not pretty slides.

· What is the purpose of this assignment? This project enables you to put the principles of the business model canvas to work. You demonstrate to the College of Business faculty and me that you have mastered the content in this course and can apply it to actual business situations.

· Should I wait until the last week of the term to work on this project? My advice to you is to work on this project each week. You will cover several building blocks during each week of the term. You can develop two or three building blocks each week when the information and your understanding are fresh. Then you can assemble your slide deck and submit your presentation during the last week. Doing this will enable you to concentrate on good content and be less stressed.

· How essential are grammar and spelling in this project? Spelling and grammar are critical in this project. Obvious spelling and grammar errors will result in a significant loss of points (see rubric). You are preparing a formal presentation that should not be treated as a casual conversation between peers. Any presentation you prepare and present in the business world should be without spelling or grammar errors! The failure to check your work can result in embarrassment and failure of your project.

· Will you evaluate my project as I work on it so I can improve it before submitting it to you? No, I grade each project once, which is when it is presented at the end of the term. You are provided with the format for the project and the required content building blocks. Have confidence in your abilities, knowledge, and work ethic, and you will do well.

· Do you have any schedule I can follow so I complete this project on time? Yes. I provide a plan below to enable you to complete the project on time.

Week 1: Decide if you want to develop a business idea or analyze the business model of an existing small business. Provide me with brief details of your business idea or the current company, so I can approve or make suggestions.

Week 2: Develop the VP, CS, and CH.

Week 3: Develop the CR, RS, KR

Week 4: Develop the KA, KP, CS

Week 5: Prepare and submit your slide deck.

I wish you luck and fair seas with this project. Apply what you are learning in the course and follow the KISS principle. Don’t overthink, and don’t make this project complicated. I am looking for a simple expression of dynamic ideas, and I am positive you can do this successfully.
