ETHC445 – Foundations of Ethics Final Exam Study GuideYOU MAY WANT TO PRINT THIS GUIDE.1. The final exam is "open book, open notes." The maximum time you can spend in the exam is 3 hours, 30 minutes. If you have not clicked the “Submit For Grade” button by then, you will be automatically exited from the exam. The Final Exam timer will count the time you have used, and once you have started the Exam you cannot pause or stop the timer. Plan your time so that you will not be interrupted and can write the whole Exam in one session.2. You should click the “Save Answers” button in the exam frequently.This helps prevent connection timeouts that might occur with certain Internet Service Providers, and also minimizes lost answers in the event of connection problems. If your internet connection does break, when you reconnect you will normally be able to get back into your final exam without any trouble. Remember, though, that the exam timer continues to run while students are disconnected, so you should try to re-login as quickly as possible. The Help Desk cannot grant any student additional time on the exam – only the instructor can grant that request. The Help Desk can help with any technology issues that may come but not with the contents of the Exam. Have their phone number handy: 1-800-594-2402 prompt 1.3. The Final Exam Period:Please see the syllabus for exam dates. 4. Reminders: You will only be able to enter your online Final Exam one timeClick the "Save Answers" button often – your work is not saved until you do so.If you lose your Internet connection during your Final Exam, logon again and try to access your Final Exam. If you are unable to enter the Final Exam, contact first the help desk and then your instructor.You will always be able to see the time remaining in the Final Exam at the top right of the page 5. The Final Exam is presented on two pages: Page 1 contains multiple choice questions; Page 2 contains essays.Make sure you click the "Save Answers" button before advancing to the next page (we also suggest clicking on save answers while you are working -- often)Complete all of the pages before submitting your Final Exam for instructor reviewDo NOT use your browser's 'Back' and 'Forward' buttons during the Final ExamPlease use the provided links for navigation6. Submitting Your Final Exam:When you are finished with the Final Exam, click on the "Submit for Grade" buttonPlease note: Once you click the "Submit for Grade" button, you will NOT be able to edit or change any of your answers7. Exam Questions There are 20 randomly selected multiple-choice questions each worth 5 points for a total of 100 points, and all are on Page 1 of the Exam. There are 6 randomly selected Short Essay questions each worth 30-40 points for a total of 200 points.The final exam covers all course TCOs and Weeks 1-7The final exam contains 2 pages, which can be completed in any order. This means that not everyone will have the same questions. Even if you do have some of the same questions, they may not be in the same order. These questions are distributed amongst all of the TCOs. The entire exam is worth 300 points; that is, 30% of the total course grade.On the essay questions your answers should be succinct, fully address each part of the question, and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding in a concise but complete answer. Most essay questions require answers that are a couple of paragraphs (not a couple of sentences) that directly speak to each part of the question.  Some students opt to work on the essay questions first, due to their higher point value and length of time needed to adequately address each question. But this is entirely your choice.Remember to always use proper citation when quoting other sources!  This means that ANY borrowed material (even a short phrase) is being placed in quotation marks with the source (URL, author/date/page #) immediately following the end of the passage. Changing a few words in a passage does NOT constitute putting it in your own words and proper citation is still required.  Borrowed material should NOT dominate a student’s work, but should only be used sparingly to support your own thoughts, ideas, and examples.  Heavy usage of borrowed material (even if properly cited) can jeopardize the points for that question.  Uncited material can jeopardize a passing grade on the exam. As a part of our commitment to academic integrity, your work may be submitted to turnitin.com, an online plagiarism checking service. So please be VERY mindful of proper citation.  8. Areas that were discussed in the threads will be prime targets. 9. Assignments will also be prime targets for revisiting. Remember that the assigned readings include BOTH our book and Doc Sharing items. 10. Reviewing the TCO’s will also be a great preparation for the final exam which I have listed below for your convenience.1Given several definitions of ethics, differentiate between ethics and morality, religion, culture, custom, justice, and the law.2Given conflicting moral duties (loyalty to community or to self, professional or family duties, national or personal obligations) and a situation in which a choice has to be made, select the best course of action based on moral theories, values, and logical reasoning.3Given a contemporary debate, such as those concerning animal rights, environmental issues, stem cell research, and so forth, analyze the cultural factors that may be involved in determining the moral position of either side.4Given the long standing debate surrounding the death penalty, evaluate the ethical positions arrived at by using either deontology or justice theories.5Given a social issue such as poverty, drug use, or lack of health care, assess the solutions arrived at through “care” and “rights” ethics.6Given recent and emerging technologies that create the possibility for abuse, develop guidelines for their usage based on utilitarian and deontological theories.7Given personal and professional choices, design a personal code of behavior using the principles of virtue ethics.8Given the interests of diverse populations (in terms of ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.), plan a course of social action that maximizes the wellbeing of all by using utilitarian principles and/or the “veil of ignorance” method.9Given an international conflict, propose a course of action and a solution by using the ethics of egoism, utilitarianism, deontological principles, or a theory of justice.
