Your paper is to study an organization and assess the strategic management of human resources. Examine the organization’s mission and vision statements and then evaluate the alignment of values, human resource practices, and business strategy. It would be ideal if you can find an organization in the private sector willing to work with you on this case. If you can find such an organization, you can interview appropriate managers to acquire more information to perform the analysis. If that is not possible, then you should find a company that you want to study and research it to answer the case questions. You can look at the company web site and search for journal and newspaper articles or books on the company for information.
A written report of the findings should be approximately 10-12 double-spaced pages (not including sources or title page) and include:
Introduction
Provide an overview about the organization. For example, what is its mission? What is the vision? What are its products/services, markets etc. This should be relatively brief, i.e., not longer than a few paragraphs or so.
How would you describe the role of the human resource function in the company? Is the HR Leader a part of the Executive Team? Does he/she serve on a Strategic Planning Committee? Where would the role of the HR Leader fall along a line between 1 as administrative and 10 as strategic? Why?
Strategic Perspective
1. Culture: How would you describe the organizational culture? What are the important values? Has management attempted to change the culture, and, if so, how? Were they successful? Why or why not?
2. HR Practices: Describe the human resource practices in employee selection and development, performance appraisal, compensation, and employment relations (practices that impact union or nonunion employee relations). Do the HR Practices support the organizational values?
3. Do the organizational values and HR practices create the core competencies (examples: relate well with customers, collaborate with colleagues) necessary to execute strategies? How?
4. Organizational Strategies: What strategies does the company attempt to implement to compete in its markets? Have the strategies been well-executed?
5. Trilogy: Is the Trilogy (values, human resource practices, and strategy) well- aligned? If yes, please explain. If no, what is misaligned, and what could be done to improve alignment?
6. Discuss any other issues that you believe are relevant to the alignment (or lack thereof) of the Trilogy in the organization. Also discuss any other Strategic Human Resource Management issues that you believe have contributed to the long run success or lack thereof for the organization.
7. Summary: Are human resources managed strategically to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage? Why or why not? What could they do differently? What is your overall assessment?
