Trident CHEM100 Module 4 - Case and SLP

Module 4 - Case
Redox Reactions and Metabolism
Assignment Overview
For this Case assignment, you will look more closely at important reactions that drive human physiology and the mechanisms by which these reactions operate.
First complete the reading in Pain-Free Biochemistry:
Chemistry IV: Equilibrium
Topic 9: Catabolism degradation vs energy metabolism
Now use this website, All About Chemical Equilibrium athttp://www.chem1.com/acad/webtext/chemeq/index.html to complete this Case assignment.
Follow these steps to complete your Case assignment for Module 4:
1. Begin by reading the Home page, then proceed through the Introduction and Le Chatelier’s Principle.
2. In The section on Le Chatelier’s Principle you will find examples of how equilibrium applies to reactions in the human body. Choose one example of an equilibrium reaction commonly found in human physiology. Explain the significance of this reaction in the body.
3. Using the website and Appendix 4 of Pain-Free Biochemistry (Equilibrium Constant), provide the equation necessary to calculate Keq for the reaction you chose.
Assignment Expectations
Answer each question using complete sentences that relate back to the question. Be sure to include a references section at the end of your assignment that lists the sources that you were required to read and view, and any additional resources you used to research your answers. Follow the references format provided in the “Background” page.

Redox Reactions and Metabolism
Oxidation and Reduction
Now read the background for Part II before proceeding to the assignment:
Chemistry V: Oxidation and Reduction
Topic 10: Oxidation and reduction in metabolism
Now watch this short lecture thatIntroduces Oxidation and Reduction provided by the Khan Academy.
The redox reaction is an important type of reaction in human physiology. View this “crash course in redox.” It provides a very quick, brief description of the relevance of redox reactions to our lives. The lecture moves very quickly, so follow up by viewing thisBozeman Science video. After you have viewed these linked lectures, answer the following questions:
What examples of redox reactions are given in the videos?
What component of the atom is exchanged in this type of reaction?
Which type of bonding is involved in redox reactions?
What is the oxidation number? Why is oxygen always -2 and hydrogen always +1?
What reaction has “saved more lives in the history of chemistry”? Explain it.
What applications were described at the end of the Bozeman Science video on redox reactions? How do they apply to living organisms and what can you calculate or determine from them?
