Discussion Forum 1: Continuity and Transformation

In Discussion Forum 1, post your response to the following discussion assignment. Reply to at least two classmates’ responses by the date indicated in the course Calendar.

In the first lectures Dr. Soltes describes a method used to consider art: namely, examining art as expressing our desires for continuity and for transformation:

• Continuity in visual content and conceptual themes in the art that surrounds us and

• Our ever-present human urge to transform/innovate what is normal and surrounds us by adding to it (visually and conceptually) from our accumulated experience (history)

In your posting, discuss both parts of the following questions:

• Discuss this tension between continuity and transformation as shown in the art considered by Soltes in these first four lectures.

• Which do you think is a stronger force today: continuity or transformation?

Once you have completed your posting, choose at least one other posting from another student and review and respond to his or her answer. Look first for postings that do not have any responses to them, and give first priority to those postings. In your review/response consider how your classmate has used the concepts of transformation and continuity, as well as other ideas and language that Soltes puts forth.

Note: Although at the beginning it may seem that Soltes’ language is unnecessarily complex, you will soon realize that his language adds meaning and color to the history being presented.
