Introduction to Research Paper

The topic for the research project will be social cognition as a scientific approach to how people process, store, apply, and respond to social information. The topic analyzes cognitive processes that relate to the understanding, perception, and implementation of visual, auditory, linguistic, and physical cues that pass on interpersonal and emotional information (Augoustinos et al., 2014). The psychological processes enable people to take advantage of being part of a social group. The topic is of interest because it examines how people perceive each other and how they come to know one another. Social cognition studies mental processes that are involved in remembering, perceiving, paying attention to other people, and thinking about other people around the world. The topic also explains the reasons behind attending to certain information about the social life of humans. Moreover, social cognition looks at how the information is stored in memory and how it is used to interact with other people.

The potential research areas in social cognition are person-perception, stereotypes, collaborative cognition, socioemotional selectivity, and positive psychology. Person-perception looks at the cognitive processes that categorize people and their behavior. Inferences about the qualities of individuals are formed and the causes of their actions determined (Macrae & Bodenhausen, 2001). Their behavior can be explained and their likely course of action determined. Stereotypes are thoughts used to represent the behavior of a population judging from a small number of people. Collaborative cognition is used to describe the thinking of groups of people together. The emotions of the people are read to determine how they think. Socioemotional selectivity studies how people prioritize different kinds of goals. Humans have a different perception about the future which makes them set different priorities. Positive psychology looks at the strength that enables people and societies to progress. Society members desire to live meaningful and fulfilling lives which makes them strive to progress.
