Religion Study

In the Golden Calf story, Moses accuses Aaron and the Israelites of committing “a great sin” (Ex 32:21.30.31).  The same phrase also occurs in Gen 20:9, even though it is translated “such great guilt.”

Scholars strongly believe that “a great sin” is an idiomatic expression.  On the basis of these texts (and their immediate contexts), what is “a great sin”?  How do you know?
