JACOB,

Describe some of the challenges in the integration of forward and reverse supply chains.

Essentially, reverse logistics is a theory which encompasses all of a company’s operations that relate to the reuse of products and materials. Specifically, reverse logistics is a process of moving goods from their final destination, typically a customer, for the purpose of reusing or properly disposing of the product (Robinson, 2014, para.2). Some of the major benefits of reverse logistics, are that it enhances customer experience, service and quality, it helps companies with recovering asset values faster, and enables companies to better achieve sustainability and environmental goals (“Benefits of a Good Reverse Logistics Strategy, 2013, para. 2). Forward integration on the other hand, is a theory that encompasses all of a company’s operations that relate to the production and handling of a product. Some examples of what forward logistic encompasses, is the movement of the goods, the resources required to produce the good, the specific tasks / operations needed to produce the good, and the quality and testing of the good. At a high-level, the process starts with the design of the product, which then moves to manufacturing / assembly, and then is distributed to various customers.

When integrating between forward and reverse logistics, companies can encounter several problems. Some of these challenges, include the ability to manage excess inventory that is being “recouped”, the visibility of the processes for reverse integration are less transparent than forward integration, the total costs for the activities associated to reverse logistics are more difficult to pin-point than forward integration, forecasting in forward logistics is much easier than reverse logistics, the marketing and advertising for each process will need to differ, product packing for reverse logistics may be damaged, overall product quality is tightly controlled in forward logistics and less in reverse logistics, and the distribution networks for forward integration tend to be clear, whereas in reverse logistics, these networks are less clear.

GABRIEL,

  1. Discuss some of the differences between take back legislations in U.S. compared to other countries.

Product take back is the concept that companies who make products and the stores that sell the products are responsible to some extent for taking the product and its waste back after consumers are done with it. Consumers usually just throw an item away when they are done, or perhaps sell it at a yard sale- either way, once its reached the end of its usefulness to the average consumer, its going to get thrown out. At least that is the norm in the U.S. However in places like Europe and Japan, take-back policies make it the manufacturers or retailers responsibility to have reverse supply chains in place for consumers to use. Through product take-back, the waste management costs are shifted to those most capable of reducing end-of-life costs (the manufacturers) by changing designs for recyclability, and product longevity.

In 1990, the German government required automobile makers to take back large amounts of scrap in use vehicles. BMW In 2000, the European Parliament passed regulations that mandates all automobile makers have take back procedures in place for EU member countries by 2015. Many European countries have laws in place where stores must accept packaging on the spot and it is immediately placed in the recycling pipeline. Customers like it because it saves them on trash collection fees which are very high and quite common in the EU.

In the U.S., there are limited take back laws. The law requiring retailers of car batteries and motor oil to accept used quantities of these items for free is one of the few examples I could find.
