How did the regions differ and how do you explain those differences

Prompts:

1. During the 40 years before the Civil War the northern and southern states were evolving as two distinct societies. How did the regions differ and how do you explain those differences? As you construct your essay, be sure to consider changes in northern class and gender relationships. Also consider differences between northern and southern interpretations of Christianity.  2. Some historians have argued that colonialism – the often-violent expansion of white settlement across the continent -- was an essential feature of United States politics and ideology from the time of Thomas Jefferson’s election to the presidency. Why was Jefferson so committed to the westward extension of the nation? Which groups (and Presidents) were most aggressive in carrying Jefferson’s legacy forward? What methods did they deploy? Was there resistance? Be sure to identify key episodes in this process.
