SC186 Chemistry

Unit 1 Assessment

Instructions

Congratulations! You have been hired to be world-renowned chemist, Dr. Ima Muchmerry’s, new lab assistant for the term. She would like you to meet her in the Chemistry lab today at noon.

One of the fundamental tasks of a lab assistant is to be able to easily convert units of measurement from metric to the U.S. standard system (Imperial Standard) and back again. As you enter Dr. Muchmerry’s lab you discover a lab bench filled with various items and a note from Dr. Muchmerry.

Download the attached assignment file.

Figure out the mystery.

Submit the completed mystery.

Task 1

On the table you will find various items that will need to be converted from the metric system into the U.S standard of measurement or from the US standard of measurement to the metric system. Once you have figured out the correct conversion, place the correct measurement in the chart. Use the same number of significant figures.  For instance, use 3 significant figures for the bottle of water and use 2 significant figures for the temperature.  The first number for each answer will give you the code to the chemistry supply closet. Here you will find your next task. Good Luck. If I don’t eat them all, I’ll bring you back a cupcake.

Task 2

As you walk in the door you see shelves of test tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks filled with labeled chemicals, a large box and a note from Dr. Ima.

Well done on solving the conversion task. Please make sure you keep the storage room code in a safe place because you will need it throughout the term.

I just received a shipment of chemicals that will need to be labeled. I noticed that when they shipped, the company forgot to fully label the various chemicals. Use the periodic table to help you accomplish the task. Once you have completed the table, add all the neutrons in the column together. The total number of neutrons will equal the time I would like to see you back in the lab next week. By the way, its PM not AM. I will see you next week.
