Discussion 2: Cocaine Use Assessment Instruments

Cocaine use continues to be a pervasive problem across cultures and throughout the United States. In 2009, 4.8 million Americans age 12 and older had used some form of cocaine, and 1 million had used crack at least once in the year prior to being surveyed. Additionally, 1.6% of 8th graders, 2.2% of 10th graders, and 2.9% of 12th graders had used cocaine (Johnston, et al., 2004).

Reflect on Marisol’s case from Week 2. As you note, she began using cocaine at an early age, and it is clear that it continues to be a problem. The severity of her cocaine use needs to be determined. For this Discussion, select an assessment (standardized or nonstandardized) to measure the severity of Marisol’s cocaine use. Then, consider any multicultural considerations that need to be integrated into the assessment process.
