In order to understand the role that ecosystems play in the health of our planet, you will be researching one particular type of habitat known as a "wetland".  Since most of you live in California, it makes sense that we focus on wetlands here in our area along the coastline.  Our local California wetlands are critical in supporting the vast number of plant and animal species found in our area.  The healthy interaction of these species in our coastal wetlands provides a whole myriad of benefits to us, including protection from storms, water and soil conditioning, production of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide (among many other essential attributes)

TASK:

For this assignment, you will conduct an internet search on a critical Southern California wetland of your choice.  Below, I have provided a list of potential wetlands.  You must have a minimum of 700 words, and you must discuss the following for full credit:

· The history of the wetland

· The historic or current impact humans are having there,

· The current efforts being made to protect or restore the wetland, and

· Any legal, governmental, or private obstacles faced by those wishing to restore the wetland.

· You must also include a bibliography with a minimum of 3 sources (from legitimate entities or organizations such as government websites, official non-government agencies, academia).  It is okay to use websites for this assignment, but you must cite them.
