Assume that Thomas is a new student in a similar school system to those we’ve talked about in our previous examples, which has classes for gifted and learning-disabled students and uses an IQ test with: µ = 100 and σ = 15.

Thomas needs to be tested to see if he is significantly different from normal. Using a

z-test for scores, test at (symbol for level of significance) = .05

Thomas gets an 86 on the IQ test.
