This week, you should navigate through online Lesson 1 on Rios online system. Do this by clicking on the appropriate lesson under the Syllabus and Lessons area. Completing Lesson 1 will also involve reading, studying, and learning the material and concepts covered in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in your textbook. You will also find it helpful to complete the pre- and post-evaluations to help gauge your learning. There are 3 assignments due this week 1) Submit the syllabus acknowledgement. The college will automatically drop any student who has not completed this requirement. 2) Send me an email with your responses to the letters at the end of the welcome letter, which is posted in the announcements area. This is essential to be able to continue in the course for credit. 3) Complete lab quiz 1. It includes 25 multiple choice questions from labs 1 and 2. It is multiple-choice. The lab quiz is a timed assignment, and the student has 13 minutes to complete it. This allows approximately 30 seconds per question, so plan accordingly. The quiz may be opened only one time. DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK until prepared and ready to complete and submit the quiz, or the quiz may not be completed for credit. When the quiz is completed, click the submit button. After 13 minutes have passed, the quiz will be automatically submitted for scoring including all unanswered items. Lab Quiz 1 covers labs 1 and 2. This quiz is password protected. The password is biology160. Lesson Objectives (These are the specific objectives that must be met, as outlined in the online lesson. Please focus on these, rather than purely on the chapter material because the exams are based off of these. In other words, the exam questions will test whether you meet and understand these particular points. Therefore, I cannot stress enough how important these are to your success in class.) By the end of the lesson, you should be able to Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should be able to Define anatomy and physiology, and explain how they are related. Explain the different levels of structural organization found within the body. List the 11 organ systems of the body and the major functions of each system. Describe the necessary life functions and survival needs of the human body. Define the concept of homeostasis and explain the difference between positive and negative feedback. Define anatomical terminology including anatomical position, body directional terms, regional terms, planes, sections, and cavities. Describe the principles of the scientific method. Anatomy is the study of body structures while physiology is the study of the functions of those structures. We study both together because function is always a reflection of the structure. For example, blood is the only connective tissue that is fluid. The fluid structure of blood is essential for its function, which is transportation of oxygen and other substances throughout the body. The human body has many levels of organization. The human body is comprised of organ systems, which are comprised of organs, which are comprised of tissues, which are comprised of cells, which are comprised of chemicals. The word homeostasis describes the bodys ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions despite a constantly changing external environment. Homeostasis is essential to the proper function of the human body and its components. Most injuries and illnesses are a result of a homeostatic imbalance and all medical treatments work to restore homeostasis. This is an important point to inform your studies throughout the course. Homeostatic control mechanisms are responsible for maintaining homeostasis. They come in two formsnegative feedback mechanisms and positive feedback mechanisms. Negative feedback mechanisms are far more commonly utilized within the body. In these systems, the output of the system shuts off the original stimulus or returns its intensity. The best example of this is the system responsible for maintaining body temperature. If body temperature increases (the stimulus), the body responds by sweating and vasodilation (output) which decreases body temps back to normal levels. If body temperature drops (the stimulus), the body responds by shivering and vasoconstriction (output) which increases body temps back to normal levels. Positive feedback mechanisms are used infrequently. In these systems, the output of the system enhances (increases) the original stimulus so that the output is accelerated. This continues until the stimulus is no longer needed. Examples of this are increasing labor contractions until birth or increased platelet production until clotting occurs. Many students struggle with the difference between negative and positive feedback mechanisms so please be sure you have a good understanding of this before you move on. Ask questions if you are having trouble distinguishing between the two. Anatomical terminology is essential for clear and precise communication among healthcare providers as well as anatomists. Some terms that you should be familiar with include superior, inferior, anterior, posterior, medial, lateral, intermediate, proximal, distal, superficial, deep, sagittal plane, median/midsagittal plane, frontal/coronal plane, and transverse/horizontal plane. The abdominopelvic cavity consists of the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity and houses many important organs. It is divided into four quadrants and nine different regions. These terms are used to discuss the locations of structures within the cavity and it is important to be familiar with these. A basic understanding of chemistry and chemical reactions is important to an accurate understanding of anatomy and physiology. Chapter 2 will provide you with the fundamental information you need to understand the chemistry of the human body. Once a quiz has been submitted, your score as well as the answers will be available. How to approach taking the at-home-quizzes The quizzes are designed to give you an idea of whether you can meet the course competencies (that are in the syllabus) and the lesson objectives. These same competencies and objectives will also be tested on the exams, so the quizzes are important in helping you determine how well you understand the course material. The best way to approach this quiz is to read through lesson and textbook, taking notes and/or creating flashcards on important concepts. Study the notes, flashcards, and textbook until you feel comfortable with the information. When you feel you are ready to take the quiz, open it up and print it off (dont click on the submit button, but rather, close it out after you print it). Then begin working on the printed off quiz. Look at the first question and try to answer it based on what you have learned. Go through the quiz and answer all of the questions you feel you know. Circle the number for each question you cannot answer. Once you have gone through the quiz, open the textbook and check your answers. First, confirm that the questions you have answered are correct, based on information in the textbook. If you knew the answer before you checked it in the book, then you can feel fairly confident that you have met this competency and lesson objective. Then begin researching the questions that you were not sure of by using the book to find the answer. Any question for which you needed to use the book to research, should be noted (along with the corresponding lesson objective and course competency) because these are areas you will need to go back and study again prior to taking the online exam. If you continue in this manner for each question, marking those that you were unsure of, you will have a list of the competencies, lesson objectives, and course material that you need to review. This is an incredibly important self-assessment tool, so dont overlook the importance. While you will not see the questions themselves repeated on the online exams, the objectives that are tested WILL BE TESTED AGAIN ON THE ONLINE EXAMS. So, do not take this lightly rather use this assessment as a way to focus your studies on the competencies and objectives that you are having difficulty with and make sure to spend more time reviewing these in preparation for the online exams. Other Tips for Success Notebook Keep a course notebook where you can keep your notes over what you learn in the online lessons and as you read the textbook. It will be easier to study if you have everything in one place. Draw Diagrams As you read the book and take notes, you might find it helpful to draw the diagrams that are included in what you are learning. Sometimes you might want to copy the diagrams from the book (like perhaps when you are learning about the Krebs cycle) or other times you might want to create your own diagrams based on what you are reading. This can help give a visual representation of how the concepts are related or connected to one another. Textbook In the textbook, there are review questions at the end of each chapter. Make sure that you can answer all of the questions after you read each chapter. If not, go back and review where necessary. Create a Weekly Schedule for Yourself Please remember that in order to be successful in this course you should be spending at least 12-15 hours each week studying biology. Some students find it helpful to create a schedule each week to help plan their time and organize their studies. I would recommend looking at everything that you do each week and then creating a daily schedule to help you stay on task. Complete all Assignments on Time Please dont wait until the last day to start your assignments - start early in the week so that you have time to handle any unforeseen problems and to get all the materials needed for the lab.
