Essay for Sociology (Soci 1301):Choose any one of the following books or films, read or watch it in its entirety, and write a 1000 word essay that analyzes the piece sociologically. Be sure you bring in at least 3 specific concepts from the class and that you clearly utilize your sociological imagination. Your paper should include a very concise summary of your book or film, a clear definition of each of the concepts that you plan to utilize, and supporting examples from the book or film. Be sure that you cite the sources you use to define each concept, even if you are only using the slides and/or textbook. While writing, keep in mind the point of all the assigned tasks in this course: to demonstrate knowledge of course concepts, to demonstrate your ability to use the sociological imagination, to demonstrate your ability to think critically, and to demonstrate your ability to write clearly and effectively. Be sure that your essay does each of these things. You can refer to the Rubric for Written Work (at the top of the home page) for specific details on how written work is graded.Books:*The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsThe Great Gastby by F. Scott FitzgeraldThe Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca SklootThe Jungle by Upton SinclairThe Bluest Eye by Toni MorissonBrave New World by Aldous HuxleyGrapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck1984 by George OrwellNickel and Dimed by Barbara EhrenreichBait and Switch by Barbara EhrenreichInfidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali*Do not use the film versions of any of these books; they are too different and lack the depth necessary for this assignment.Films:Children of MenSickoTransamericaIn TimeFlightPreciousDowntown Abbey, Season 1Rubric for Written Work:All written work will be graded based on the following guidelines.Subject Knowledge: 40%All written work should demonstrate substantial mastery of the pertinent course concepts and substantial knowledge about the subject(s) in question.Sociological Perspective/Imagination: 30%All written work should demonstrate a clear understanding of the sociological perspective/imagination.Quality of Writing: 20%All written work should be organized and clear and should include proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Elaboration: 10%All written work should meet the stated length requirements and each response should be elaborate enough to fully and thoroughly answer each question. Please note that although elaboration is only worth 10% of your grade, failure to elaborate will likely also negatively impact both your Subject Knowledge and your Sociological Perspective/Imagination scores since too short of a response will be unlikely to appropriately demonstrate either content mastery or the ability to think like a sociologist.
