Activity #4: Who Moved My Cheese?Directions: Read Who Moved My Cheese? and thoroughly answer questions 1-5Introduction: Change is not something we readily embrace, which may explain why Spencer Johnson’s allegorical tale Who Moved My Cheese? remains one of the best-selling business books of all times. In this tale, Johnson addresses change both as it applies to our personal and professional lives. The parable takes place in a Maze where four characters are faced with unexpected change: someone moves their “Cheese”! Each character deals with the unexpected change in different ways. As your text points out, companies that fail to change run the risk of organizational decline. From a management perspective, the point of this story is about adjusting attitudes toward change. You may relate to some of the characters in this parable; some embrace change and move throughout the Maze easily; while others resist and long for the contentment of the Maze from years past. Problem is, as Johnson argues, change is inevitable: “Adapt to Change Quickly—The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese”. Given human nature, we don’t want to be left behind. Consider poor Hem who awaits the return of the cheese. This would be comparable to Blockbuster awaiting the resurgence of the days of video/DVD rentals and rejecting the presence of video streaming and services like RedBox.1. At first Haw feared the unknown and worried that he had waited too long in Cheese Station C. Just when he thought he was getting ahead, he would lose his way. It was challenging and frustrating. Later, he admitted that being back out in the Maze wasn’t nearly as bad as he had feared.Have you ever experienced something similar? For example, was there a time when you were so fearful of change, but once you addressed it, you realized that it really wasn’t as bad as you had imagined? For full points, thoroughly explain.2. Identify both the Cheese and the Maze in your own life. Consider what might happen if someone moved your cheese. Imagine and discuss the ways you might have to cope with change. For full points, thoroughly explain.3. There is a part in the book when Haw looks back to where he had come from and yearns for those comforts of the past.Have you had an experience in your life where you could relate to this feeling of wanting to resist change because you wanted to go back to familiar territory? For full points, thoroughly explain.4. Still at Cheese Station C, Hem tells Haw, "You know if we just work harder, we'll find that nothing has really changed that much." Hem goes on to tell Haw that the Cheese is nearby and it's hidden behind a wall. So, the next day, they come equipped with tools to "find" the Cheese. Instead of finding the Cheese, though, they left a large hole in the wall. What message is the author trying to send? Thoroughly explain.5. “Maybe,” Hem said, “we should just sit here and see what happens. Sooner or later they have to put the Cheese back.”Have you ever participated in an organization/club/team that resembled Hem’s mentality? Be sure to thoroughly explain the experience and the impact it had on the organization/club/team. Was it a positive or negative experience? For full points, thoroughly explain.
