In this experiment, you construct and analyze Punnett squares for monohybrid crosses of the organism, Drosophila in order to predict possible genotypes and phenotypes for each cross.Go to Lab website:http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/virtual_labs/BL_05/BL_05.htmlClick on the image of the TV to watch the animation regarding Punnett Squares (click on play and have volume turned up on computer).  Also, you can click on the “Information” button to read details using Punnett squares in genetic predictions.Lab Instructions:Perform the following instructions for three different scenarios (to change scenarios, you will need to click on the reset button). Click on the notebook found on the lab table to bring up the Punnett Square evaluation. Record scenario number within Excel Data table provided. Given the scenario instructions (box in top left), determine the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring based upon the parent’s genetic profile. Select parents to cross by clicking on the arrow near Parent 1 or Parent 2. Click on the Check Parents button.  If selection is not correct, you can re-select the genetic profile for the parents until correct. If you selected the correct profile for the parents, the alleles of the selected parents will appear next to each box of the Punnett square. Given the selected parents’ genetics, determine the genotypes of the offspring that you expect to result from the genetic cross.  Fill in the Punnett square by clicking and dragging the appropriate genotypes at the bottom of the Punnett square to the appropriate boxes within the Punnett square.  Given the genotypes of the offspring, determine the phenotypes of the offspring that you expect to result from the genetic cross.  Fill in the Punnett square by clicking and dragging the appropriate phenotypes at the bottom of the Punnett square to the top halves of the appropriate boxes in the Punnett square. Click the Check Offspring button.  If the genotype of phenotype in the Punnett square is filled in incorrectly, then that part of the box will be highlighted.  Re-examine the parents’ alleles to determine the expected offspring and try again. Once the Punnett square is completed, record the data into the Excel data file provided. Click on the return button to save your data and return to the navigation screen.  Click on the reset button to erase your data and get a different scenario.  Repeat this procedure with two additional scenarios for a total of 3 scenarios.  Save the Excel spreadsheet as M6 Exp 1 with your initials. For example, if your name is Rachel Griffen, it would be M6 Exp 1 RG. Prepare the lab report which includes a title page, abstract, introduction (background information on scientific concepts with references), methods, results/discussion, conclusion and references. Submitted lab reports should follow the guidelines outlined in the Lab Report Guidelines. In the Introduction section of your lab report, in paragraph form, provide information on utilizing Punnett squares to predict the genotype and phenotype within offspring.  In the Methods section of your lab report, in paragraph form, provide enough information so that someone could duplicate your experiment. In the Results section of the lab report, also in paragraph form, write out the observed genotypes and phenotypes within your monohybrid crosses for parents and offspring.  Refer the reader to the Excel table within your results section (with table/figure labels).  In the Discussion section, make a comparison between the three different scenarios selected and answer the questions in the Journal section of the experiment. Do NOT use the Journal area of the experiment to submit your lab report. Submit your completed lab report to the assignment submission dropbox. Repeat the process with the assignment dropbox to attach and submit your Excel spreadsheet.
