Juvenile JusticeStudent’s NameProfessor’s Name:April 17, 2013-Juvenile Justice We are aware of the importance of criminal justice system and how it is a key part of any society and criminal justice agencies play a strong role in maintaining harmony in the society. Laws in any country across the globe are made with the objective to protect the society from any disturbance or disharmony. The laws also ensure that the citizens get a chance to live in a safe, equal treated and peaceful environment for their best development and growth, both physically and mentally. There are several aspects of criminal justice and one crucial aspect of it is the Juvenile Justice. With the development of the society, it is required that the juvenile justice system and the justice method need to develop with time to ensure that they stay relevant with the altering times. Otherwise they will become obsolete and will assist no good to the humanity and the people. In this paper, we will focus on this aspect of criminal justice which is becoming a major issue in the last few years and that is Juvenile Justice. We will take a closer look at the Juvenile justice system in the United States and the state of Juvenile Delinquency. But before we proceed further on this, let us first understand the definition and meaning of the term Juvenile Justice. "Juvenile Justice System is socio-legal process having responsibility and authority for public reaction to current juvenile delinquency and deterrence of future juvenile delinquency, including within that process the public and private agents, agencies, laws, rules, and policies having to do with juvenile delinquency" (Weiner, 1987) Now that we have defined the Juvenile Justice System, let us understand what other things will be a part of this paper. This paper will explore the facts about increase crimes by juveniles and the key factors behind it. We will also look at the steps and action taken to prevent juvenile crimes in future and methods for bring the juvenile criminals back on the right path. We will furthermore explore how the law department, agencies and experts have developed over the years to hold up pace with the altering times and how relevant is it in today’s context. Once, we have evaluated these aspects we will go on to explore what can be done to prohibit juvenile crimes. There are various factors that impact young minds and cause them to commit juvenile crimes. Some of the key factors that impact the young minds are mentioned below and it will help us understand the issue better:Increasing violence in media including television, films, newspapers and other mediums too.Negligence from parents.Misuse of technologyDysfunctional family and emotional systemIncreasing anger Built up negative emotionsLack of loveLack of positive environment around Out of these various factors affecting the Juvenile crimes and the justice system television and violence on television is very important. “The amount of juvenile crime and violence has increased many times since the invention of the television. Over the past 40 years, there had been a growing concern of the potential negative influences that television has on society.” (Macbeth, 119). Not just that, another expert Joy Osofsky agrees with the increasing role of Television violence in making kids commit heinous crimes without realizing its gravity and the impact it can cause. Television put the seed of violence in the mind of the kids since their existence. "Children learn what they see and they do not learn that violence is bad. Too often, they learn that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflict". (Osofsky, 4). The other key objectives behind understanding and researching the Juvenile Justice system is to focus on certain key improvements that can be brought in this area which can help the entire system and society. Some of these are mentioned and discussed below:Prevention The Juvenile Justice System should focus on prevention of juvenile offenses very strongly and ensuring that right education is made available to curb such occurrences. The philosophy here is that it is ideal to ensure that such an environment is maintained in the state that juvenile offenses are prevented. This objective can be achieved through education of the children and their families from time to time. This objective can be achieved by the process of strengthening partnerships with judicial, legislative and community stakeholders in the country and in this domain. The idea is that with strengthen partnership with other stakeholders in law the work on promoting welfare in this context can be achieved easily.Effective intervention on time While prevention is the primary focus, but we should also, not shy away from the right intervention to ensure safety of the public. Thus, another key objective of this system is timely and effective intervention. There are many intervention techniques that the Juvenile Justice system across the globe applies and implements to achieve this objective of public safety. We can surely learn from those interventions and see what suits us best.Safe and nurturing environment for children Having a safe and positive environment to the children can promote their all round appropriate development. This is one of the most important things and if this is present there will be fewer chances of kids committing crimes.Restoring physical and mental health On one hand, investing, executing and punishing juvenile offenders is a key part of the Juvenile Justice work, on the other hand it is also important for this system to ensure that the physical and mental health of these offenders is preserved and restored. The philosophy under which the Juvenile Justice operates is still of reform them and thus ensuring appropriate physical and mental health of these offenders becomes a key objective. The objective of this paper is to bring forth the key challenges the system faces in taking action against juveniles. Also, it will discuss what is causing juvenile to be more aggressive and hurting to others. The paper will help in understanding prevention, intervention and punishment aspect of Juvenile Justice. Annotated BibliographyIn this section of the assignment we will look at the various resources that we will use to begin with for our research on the issue. The details of the sources are mentioned below:Kelleher, Micheal D. When Good Kids KILL. 1998. Praeger Publishers, Westport, CT. This Book talks about the various increasing incidences of violent crime committed by teenagers which has escalated in the past few years. Breaking the myth that only bad kids commit crimes, this books describes cases where good kid who have never shown any kind of violence earlier have committed the crime. This source helped in understanding the nature and psyche behind juvenile crimes. Nadel H, Spellmann M, Alvarez-Canino T, Lausell-Bryant LL, Landsberg G. The cycle of violence and victimization: a study of the school-based intervention of a multidisciplinary youth violence-prevention program. Retrieved on April 16, 2013, from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8909631 This source talks about program and ways of educating kids about bullying and its impact and how to make themselves bully-proof. This program takes the approach that bullying happens because there is a conflict between the bully and the victim. The program takes an approach to resolve this conflict.MacBeth, Tannis M. Tuning in to Young Viewers. 1996. Sage Publications, Inc. Thousand Oaks, CA.This book focuses on the effects of television viewing and how that makes children vulnerable to violence. This source gives a psychological and social-science perspective, on the subject of how television viewing affects children. It also talks about how television affects socialization of children.Hankcock, Barry W., Sharp, Paul M. Criminal Justice in America; theory, practice, and policy. 2000. Prentice-Hall, Inc. New Jersey. This source gives us a good idea and understanding of the American justice system. It is very important to study this to understand the laws and procedures for Juvenile Justice. For anyone interested in exploring and finding out on laws on juvenile justice or of criminal justice system of the country, this source is quite helpful.Meyer, E. (2012). Bullying Intervention Programs: Where Have We Gone Wrong? Retrieved on April 16, 2013, from http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/gender-and-schooling/201204/bullying-intervention-programs-where-have-we-gone-wrong This source looks at mild offences like bullying and explores the psyche behind them and finds out what is it that goes wrong with these kids that they turn into juvenile offenders. This source is quite good from the perspective understanding mild juvenile offences and their real origins.Brendtro, L & et al. (2006). Pathways to Violence Prevention (Reclaiming Children and Youth, Volume 15, Issue. This source highlights various practices that can create positive outcomes for children and youth growing up in high-risk environments. These methods have already been tested and proven to be very effective. This source will help our understanding of various interventions. Radek, K. (2005). Violence In Schools: Issues, Consequences, And Expressions. Greenwood Publishing Group. This book contains various cases and details of school violence ranging from mild to major. It gives us a comprehensive view various school violence and how can they be prevented. This source has many relevant tools to prevent Juvenile crimes.Little, Michael (1990). Young men in prison: The Criminal Identity Explored through the Rules of Behaviour. Vermont: Dartmouth. This source gives a good peep in what happens to the Juvenile offenders while in the prison. Also, how can we transform their life even after their first major crime.Osofsky, Joy D. Children in a Violent Society. 1997. Guilford Press. New York. This source focuses on the increasing violence in our society all over including news reports, television shows, computer games, movies, and other media. Apart from that increasing number of real life violence is also exposing children to it increasing their risk of becoming violent if required interventions and measures are not taken within time. Many effective prevention methods and tools are shared in this source. Quay, Herbert (1987). Handbook of juvenile delinquency. New York: Wiley. This source gives an overall perspective on the subject of juvenile delinquency. It talks about its history, how it has evolved over the years, where it is, what factors have contributed most to it. Also, what are the prevention and intervention method in such a situations.Statistical methodsResearch and data gathering is going to be very important part of this assignment. It plays an important role in understanding the system better and exploring what works best for the juvenile offenders and how can they be brought back on track. To see the scope for this study on the subject of Juvenile Justice it is important to conduct my own research. There are many ways to gather data for this research. Two broad categories in which these ways can be divided are: Primary Research and Secondary Research. For the purpose of this paper I would like to use a combination of both primary and secondary research to gather the required data and information. The reason for using a combination of the two methods is that there are some sort of information that we need to find out about the subject that exits already while there is certain information and data that is not available so we will use a combination of both research methods for that. At the identical time there were numerous such data that could help us in our project and is readily available with research organisations, industrial bodies, state bodes and over the internet. We have made good use of such resources to shape up our business. For the primary researches, we will use the following Research methods: Focus Group interviews and questionnaire. Focus group interviews we will do with the Juvenile offenders, their parents, friends, teachers, etc. to find out what are they issues with them, how are they dealing with the situations, how are they coping. We will also explore what caused them to commit the crimes they did and how do they feel about it now. All this information will give us a good peep in the issue and help us understand it better. We will also use questionnaires to know more about consumer’s attitude towards such a product and other things they would like to share. Questionnaire helped us to reach out to more number of consumers as they were easy to execute. With the use of secondary research, we will zero in on the key issues in the system of Juvenile justice. The secondary research will give us an idea in terms of what is happening at the larger level in this area and what are the experts thinking about this issue. Moreover, what are the solutions applied in various places to improve the condition. Choosing the right geographies is significant for the success especially in the first year. The locations where the weather is very warm and rains unpredictable will be best suited. Buyers will need this merchandise more in such geographies and therefore it is significant to do our research about such markets beforehand. The reason for using a combination of the two methods is that there are some sort of information that we need to find out about the subject that exits already while there is certain information and data that is not available so we will use a combination of both research methods for that.As far as the types of statistical methods for analyzing the collected data is concerned, there are various options for us including: Correlation, Regression, Factor analysis and time series analysis. The correlation method looks at relation between two or more variables and how they affect each other. The advantage of correlation method is that it is very simple and gives very to the point and straight results. However, there is another disadvantage of this method and that is sometimes it becomes difficult to determine that the change in one variable is actually caused by the change in the other and not by something else. Regression looks at relationship of variables over the period of time by going back in time. This method is also quite effective. However, regression is quite extensive and takes too much of time and effort in the process of analyzing. Another important statistical method is factor analysis which determines the variability among the correlated variables. This method’s advantage is that it really gets in the detailed results but again it is very time consuming. The time series method measures data over a period of time on regular intervals. This is very effective as it gives very detailed results which are in-depth and very reliable. The drawback is it requires a lot of planning which is not easily achievable. For the purpose of this paper, I will prefer correlation statistical tool more, as it is a simple tool which does not require too much of time and yet it produces very effective results. Based on the requirements of the project, this is the best method for this purpose and so we will go ahead with this.ReferencesKelleher, Micheal D. When Good Kids KILL. 1998.
