CHANGING DEATH MANAGEMENT PRACTICESDeath has changed over the past century. The way that we see death and the way that it has occurred makes a difference about how things are done and how ceremonies are held. The way that people deal with death and the way that death is seen will continue to change as time goes on, but the general idea that everyone must day will always stay the same. It will be interesting to see what changes and what causes the differences, but I believe we will have the changes better documented with the use of technology. The first change in death management has been in the way that deaths are celebrated. The traditional funeral has changed from a simple goodbye and burial to a very formal celebration of remembrance for the individual (NYTimes.com, 2011).With the changes in the way funerals are held, we have also seen many changes in the way that people hope to live out their after-life. It used to be tradition to bury the body six feet underground in hopes that they can live their after-years in peace while still having a proper burial for visiting. However, it has become increasingly common for individuals to be cremated and actually found inside relative’s homes on display, rather than being placed in a cemetery that does not necessarily have any meaning to the members of the family.Second, the death from obesity has increased. Unfortunately, obesity and illnesses that originate from excess food intake have caused an extremely high increase in the amount of people that are hospitalized and ultimately die as a result of their eating habits.Next, the amount of people that are born with illnesses has seen decrease overtime. I believe that this change has occurred as a result of new technologies that can help protect infants, but also as we have found vaccines for illnesses and researched better diets for eating while pregnant. The rate for infant illness and premature births still remains high, but I look for this rate to continue to decrease as a result of new research findings and dedication to finding solutions for more technology innovation. With all of that being said the fourth thing that has changed overtime with death management and the causes of deal with drug use. Drug use has increased, causing increased fear that new diseases and death rates from these diseases and recreational drug use will take place. While there have been statistics showing drug use in certain categories has gone done, the problem is that more intense drug use is taking place through more serious drugs such as prescription pills.Through the advancement of technology and better monitoring of babies before they are born have come to help the miscarriage rates decrease throughout the United States and other parts of the world (eHow.com, 2011). While the 1900s held more miscarriages than healthy babies, the miscarriage rate has decreased dramatically showing signs of hope in developing countries as well. It will be great to see these rates drop even more as increased technology use and a better rate of cost for the technology will decrease as well. One of the bigger issues that we have seen is that the rate of death from pre-meditated murders has increased dramatically overtime. While the situation used to occur when dictators would take effect, we have seen an increase in the amount of people who are turning against others for reasons that are minor in the long run. There has to be a way to decrease this rate so that we can see other rates decline as well. With that being said, I believe that as things are fixed in these areas that we will have population problems with issues dealing with homeless individuals and not having big enough areas to hold the entire world population. As more individuals enter the world we will find that there is simply not enough room for everyone involved? One way or another, the world will have to straighten out the population; unfortunately, this will probably be due to starvation or other means of not being able to afford the things they need in order to live.Another issue that helps increase the population is that the rate of disease has decreased. Overall, the diseases are still present, but the way that they are handled has helped them to become less fatal. Even when new diseases are found they are often treated within six to twelve months before a large amount of people are harmed from the case. One of the last issues that deal with the top ten problems rated to death management and death occurrences deals with the suicide rate. For unknown reasons the rate of suicide has increased dramatically. It seems that this is reversed since life used to be much harder in the past before new technologies existed. The rate of suicide has actually increased dramatically over the past decade. Whether or not this will continue to occur is unknown, but it believed that this will probably be the case for several more years. Finally, the biggest factor that has affected death management and death occurrences is a result of a longer life span. The ability for us to live longer has made death plans are well-thought out and more money to be spent on sharing the rest of our lives with the ones we love. In fact, it is believed that many people are choosing to have their bodies frozen in hopes that they can come back in a time when there are medicines available to cure their diseases. I believe we will run into problems with this down the road as the population continues to increase (About.com, 2011). It is expected to reach a new high of seven billion people this month. Overall, there are many things that have contributed to the changes of death management throughout our lifetimes, so we can expect that they will change for our kid’s generation as well. It will be interesting to tell them how things were different in the past when compared to what it is now. I bet we can all look back and see just how different it was not so long ago.I hope that we continue to see increased research to help cure diseases and find ways to improve out lifespans, but we will have to find a way to make room for everyone in the world and ensure that we are not harming others by having the population increase so dramatically. It will be interesting to see what changes, but I believe for the most part we will see positive results. Attitudes in America have changed overall to incorporate more details and more dedication to our loved ones. However, we have found ways to show that we understand death is something that cannot be avoided and something that we should not want to avoid. Everyone has a time to go and showing that we accept that is the first sign in showing that we are strong as human beings. ReferencesAbout.com: Need. Know. Accomplish... (n.d.). About.com: Need. DIRECTIONS FOR THE ESSAYS

Essay I Changing Death Management Practices DUE OCTOBER 14

A central theme of the course and of your reading for the first examination is change. As you read the first five chapters in THE LAST DANCE pay particular attention to how the American treatment of death changed from 1900 to the present. A key concept of this course is the epidemiologic transition, the shift in death from the young to the elderly. Controlling death and confining it to the elderly has impacted society in profound ways. The orphanage, once a fixed feature of our society, has all but disappeared. Couples who fully expect their children to survive them no longer have large families to insure than an offspring will be around to care for them. More American children have relationships with grandparents (and somtimes great-grandparents) than ever before. Marriages, commonly ended by the death of a spouse in the early 1900s, are more frequently ended by divorce. The death of a child which was once considered commonplace is now viewed as a tragedy. These are but a few of the changes discussed in your text. As you read the first five chapters make a note of each change discussed so it can be incorporated into your first essay. Your essay should address changes in actual death management practices (such as burial) as well as changes in attitudes toward death.

This is not an essay that can be dashed off at the last moment and, to be frank, this is the assignment in which students in the last few sessions did the most poorly. While I will not assign a specific length for the paper, I do expect you to address at least ten or more changes that have taken place since 1900 and I ask that you rely solely on the text to cite the changes. Obviously, the more comprehensive the essay, the higher the grade. In the body of your paper describe a practice, note how it changed from 1900 to the present, and then move to a second practice.

This is not a question over cross-cultural practices. Rather, the paper should address how death practices and attitudes in America have changed from 1900 to the present.
