Unit 7 DiscussionThe Honorable Cory Booker,United State SenateWashington, DC 20510Dear Senator Booker: We are all aware of the severe devastation military efforts have had in the Middle East region, especially in Afghanistan. Our military involvement in that region is infirmed by our efforts and rights to protect ourselves as a nation, but this effort should not come at the expense of the Afghani people who are dying of hunger. Severe draught in Afghanistan is leading to hunger displacement of families, with the United Nations predicting that 2 million people will be severely food insecure in that country. One in two displaced people in Afghanistan say that they lack enough food to feed their families, being forced to skip meals for the food to be enough and last longer. As much as we can deliver food to them for their immediate need, we need to be looking at their long term needs when it comes to food security and my suggestion would be allocation of taxpayer subsidized foreign aid towards rehabilitation of irrigation and building of irrigation dams.Water is the livelihood for the people of Afghanistan, as well as their economy. This is an economy traditionally dominate by Agriculture which employs over 60% of the country’s workforce, but decades of war have destroyed these irrigation systems and water supply systems that are very important for the agricultural economy of the country. Further complications have been brought about by the draught that the region is experiencing. Afghanistan is an arid and semi-arid region and as thus, irrigation is very important for the country to be able to feed itself. Food security in Afghanistan must start with water security and for this reason Senator, I am asking for your help to initiate a foreign policy to enable the supply of irrigation technology to help address the issues of hunger and draught in Afghanistan. There were irrigation efforts that were started in 2004, and by 2008, there was increased yield of crops like maize, barley, rice, and horticultural crops which could allow foreign exchange earning. There was reduced water disputes as well. This is an effort tried and tested before by Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to significant success, and I believe that if we take it as part of our foreign direct aid to Afghanistan, it can help in rebuilding the country.Thank you for your time senator.Kind regards.Danielle S.
