Professor and class,Healthcare and reform have become a major epidemic across the United States, and because of this it is important to be able to identify and implement drivers of high performance healthcare systems into our daily professional practices. Two vital drivers which should show acknowledgement and application, are both quality and cost. These drivers could improve the healthcare systems exponentially as well as means some distress as it relates to the profession and practice.The quality driver of high performance healthcare systems is an integral component which could make or break a healthcare system. Keeping the quality of care in mind coupled with the safety of patients could transform the viability of a healthcare system. Healthcare providing organizations should implement and routinely conduct measurement and improvement efforts across the entirety of their visits with patient to gradually increase the quality of the care produced by each of their sites. I current work in the emergency room and believe there are boundless pathways of effort that can be accomplished into the emergency room. A few of these tools include innovative and consistent patient outreach programs like regular newsletters and community group advertisements being distributed to patients, preventative care and patient education that is effective in approach and thorough. Finally, participation in continuous learning opportunities and research mechanisms that measure the effort outcomes and determine effectiveness regularly.In the United States, healthcare costs are typically financed by individuals (patients) on the consumer level, governments on behalf of the consumer, as well as third party businesses. The cost driver must be examined from multiple avenues of perspective, with three of the major viewpoints being the healthcare providers, developers of healthcare technologies and methodologies, and the consumers of the healthcare systems. In my field of practice each new healthcare technology produced and disseminated into the American healthcare system comes at an additional costs. "A technical review panel convened to advise CMS on future health care costs trends concluded that about half of real health expenditure growth is attributable to medical technology, where new options for diagnosis and treatment often replace older technologies when none existed before" (Norbeck, 2012).These costs drive up the stakes for healthcare providers as well as the developers of these technologies; which cause for the patients we care for daily, to acquire an increasingly large amount of debt to secure their health and well-being. "Technological change is the most important driver of health care spending increases over time"(Norbeck, 2012). Going forward in my practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner we should recognize the difference in and become comfortable in our awareness of the drivers in healthcare.
