Research proposalCapital punishment is absolute, can the same be said about our justice system? Capital punishment, the death penalty has been a method of disciplinary action since early colonial days. The adolescent American colonies had adopted this method of punishment. Jamestown colony of Virginia had the pleasure of having the first recorded execution; Captain George Kendall was executed for being a spy of Spain. This taste of capital punishment flooded open the gates, Virginia Governor enacted Moral and Martial Laws, allowing the death penalty for minor crimes. Similar to our system today, laws related to the death penalty varied depending on the colony. A civilized nation can solve its criminal problems without taking an irreversible and an arguable inhumane step. A court sanctioned punishment by death of very serious crimes. Following due process of the law one could be tried again to decide if they should be sentence to the death penalty. The death penalty is still active in 31 states, majority using the lethal injection the final course of death. In 2015 the united states had the smallest amount of executions since 1991, a total of 28, meanwhile 52 capital punishment crimes were imposed, also the lowest since the 1990s. As of January 2017, 1,44 people have been executed since 1976, the year the Supreme court reinstated the death penalty.
