You should understand the legal ethics and responsibilities of the defense counsels who represent criminal clients. You should understand the attorney client privilege and confidentiality associated with that relationship. The defense has an obligation to defend his client to the best of his ability. The rules of discovery are critical to the defense since the defense attorney can argue that certain evidence must be suppressed due to  legal or procedural issues.
