1) Drawing on Gutek (chapter 23) and the additional readings made available, compare and contrast the educational philosophies of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.

2) Consider not only the conditions in which each thinker grew from childhood to adulthood, but also the conditions under which each thinker worked, the context within each worked.

3) In what ways do the ideas of these thinkers have continuing relevance today?

4) If you were going to study the lives and works of these two thinkers with fifth or sixth grade students, what would you want to accomplish and how might you go about accomplishing it?
