Week 5 Journal: Curfew

1 page assignment (Please See Attachment for Case Study)

Implementing a curfew can cause potential conflict and pushback from some parents and kids in the community who will disagree with the curfew. How will you address that pushback, both from the legitimate complaints (teens getting off work after curfew hours) and (not illegitimate, but nonconformist) from parents and kids who view the policy as overly controlling?

To Prepare

  • Review the media piece Case Study: Police Curfew Announcement in this module’s Learning Resources, addressing the new curfew.
  • Consider how you would address the new curfew in your town
  • If you were presenting in person, explain how you would address the potential disagreement from the community that might arise.

Case Study: Police Curfew Announcement Program Transcript BRAD JOHNSON: Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you for coming to this press briefing. My name is Lieutenant Brad Johnson, and I am in charge of the department's community policing efforts. As most of you have been reporting, the City Council recently approved a summer curfew that is to begin this evening and be in effect until school starts again in June. Under this new city ordinance, children ages 13 and under must be inside their homes unless accompanied by an adult relative from 9:00 PM until 6:00 AM. Children between the ages of 14 and 17 have an 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM curfew. If a child is found outside during the curfew and not accompanied by an adult relative, officers will drop of a child at their home, and Child Protective Services will visit the home to offer support services. If we are unable to obtain a home address or the name of a guardian, the child will be taken to one of our four recreational centers, and a penalty of $500 may be assessed on the family. FEMALE SPEAKER: How the hell is that going to work for my family? I've got a child who is working at night until 11:00, while I'm working at my job across town. I can't leave my job to take my daughter home, and I don't want any Child Protective Service person in my house.
