Cultural Identity Reflection

Assignment Purpose

Our beliefs, values, and ultimately our culture influence how we view ourselves and the world around us.  This analysis requires you to reflect on your various cultural identities that shape you, your behavior, and your communication.  This assignment requires you to examine the cultural values that shape, reflect, and predict your culture’s attitudes, beliefs, and communication norms.  Specifically, this assignment examines the beliefs, values, and norms that you have been taught as a member of this culture – these are often subconscious as we “know, because we know.”

Think of this assignment as an ethnography of you - your culture, the influence of others, and your personal traits and work together to make you, you. The elements of  culture,  communication and  identity should be paramount in your reflection.

Tasks

 

FIRST, develop a social map of yourself, aiming to have at least 15 facets of your identity listed. Label each of the items you list on your social map as CULTURAL, SOCIAL, or PERSONAL identity components.  Attach this to your assignment submission.

. Using a piece of 8x11.5 paper or an application on your computer (i.e. PPT, Word, Google doc, write your full name and any nicknames you are willing to share in the middle and circle it (i.e. Jennifer Anderson; Jen, jenbush; Mom)

. Think about other facets of your identity and write FIFTEEN of those in different places on your paper and circle each of them individually (i.e. Mom, Runner, Teacher, PNW, UW, empty nester, XC, Soccer, Lacrosse, sense of humor, pessimist trying to be an optimist, family, siblings, love to travel, Canadian accent but not Canadian, raised a Christian but no longer practicing, feminist, wife, BC, running partner, etc.)

Next, answer all of the following questions. Include at least 2 concepts from our reading/notes/lectures in bold font with page/lecture references:

Family/Relational History

. Where do you consider "home?"

. Please share 3 individuals/relationships that have/had a significant influence on your life. What is their lasting influence on your life?

. What events did you celebrate growing up (i.e. birthdays, Christmas, Ramadan, Passover, Halloween, Day of the Dead, etc? How?

. As an adult, what events do you celebrate? How are they similar to, or different from, the ones you celebrated as a family?

Cultural History and Worldview

. What language(s) do you speak?

. Share two cultural values we covered in the Cultural Values Module that best describe your values and behaviors (i.e. individualism; collectivism; high or low power distance, etc.). Describe how your behaviors reflect each of the values you choose. Provide a specific example for each.

. Share 3 racial/ethnic/socioeconomic/religious/gender/organizational groups with which you identify. Share specific examples of how you identify with those groups.

Personal Characteristics and Values

. Share 3 personal traits that make you unique. Share an example of how these impact your communication and relationships.

. Share 2 hobbies you enjoy and what they add to your life.

. How did you choose health care as your career path? How does it fit with your cultural and personal characteristics and values? 

Criteria

. Attached social mapping sheet to the assignment. It lists at least 15 items and each item is labeled cultural, social, or personal identity.

. Responses are thoughtful and reflective in terms of cultural, relational, and personal identity.

. Responses make connections with course material. Course concepts are bolded or CAPITALIZED with page/lecture references.

. Responses are well-written and proofread.
