Vocation And Work Ethic

The Reformation emphasized the idea of calling to normal work in the world, in contrast to a monastic vocation that withdrew from the world; The textbook outlines Luther's view of vocatio, and the priesthood of all believers, and Calvin's encouragement to activism within the secular word.

Review pages 163 and 169 and write a 300 word response discussing the Protestant sacralization of secular work and Max Weber's theory that this encouraged the development of Northern European capitalism. Do you agree with this idea? or disagree?

  1. Give a brief review or summary of Protestant views of the priesthood of beleivers and 'calling' from chapter 3, pp. 163 and 169.
  2. Give you own reaction to the idea that Capitalism took root and grew in Protestant countries.
  3. Do you think that this role (if true) of Protestantism was a good thing? or not so good?
