Module 2 Assignment

Video Viewing Assignment 2 – Fatigue

Introduction. Our performance as a professional is influenced not only by design, but also by our biomedical and physical factors. It is intuitive that we do not perform at the top of our game when we are

I - ill;

M - taking certain medications;

S - stressed;

A - under the influence of alcohol;

F- fatigued;

E - not adequately nourished (eating).

IM SAFE is a checklist commonly used by pilots to assess the risk of some of the common performance shaping factors. Patient lives depend on top performance from health care professionals, and each one of us should develop an awareness of human factors such as fatique. Watch the interview with Linda Aiken, a leader in healthy working environment. Think about reasons why nurses may work in fatigued conditions. Pay attention to the two main causes of fatigue mentioned by Linda: one is understaffing, the other very poor work environments.

Health care professionals are often put in situations where fatigue is expected, especially during challenging times such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. Did you know that over two-thirds of the nurses in one study reported struggling to stay awake on duty, 20% reported actually falling asleep on duty, and over half reported struggling to stay awake driving home from work? These numbers were summarized in a book chapter on nurse fatigue and patient safety (Links to an external site.), which also reported that during fourth consecutive 12-hour shifts, risk of an accident increases by 17-36%. The book chapter is short, and has practical information for nurses on managing fatigue.  As professionals, it serves the patient, ourselves, and our loved ones to learn more about fatigue, and how to manage fatigue as individuals and as managers. Awareness of impact of fatigue on safety should help us to use "counter-measures", such as shift assignment, naps, breaks, calling for help, and judicious use of caffeine.

(Want to explore further? Check a case report with a commentary (Links to an external site.) by a nurse on AHRQ PSNET.  Knowledge and insights gained in “N3335 Promoting Healthy Lifestyles (Links to an external site.)” should help you to optimize your performance at work, including ways to reduce and address fatigue.)

Expectations. This is an assigned video and you are required to submit your reflections after watching the video.  Click the video link below to watch. Then click the link “Submit Assignment” ABOVE, to show the submission area. You can write your reflections in a file and then copy and paste, or write directly into the space provided. Do not forget to submit.

Use the following two questions to guide  your reflection (300 words or less)

Have you ever worked when you are fatigued?

Do you see a way to use I’M SAFE checklist in your workplace?

Grading. A rubric is provided to explain the criteria for points and how you are graded.
