Module 1 - SLP

DEFINING AND MEASURING BIODIVERSITY

Now that you have a solid understanding of the study of ecology and how scientists measure biodiversity, let’s continue to develop the relationship between economics and the natural world. We start with the question:

  • Why do we care about biodiversity and the natural world?

To complete your SLP assignment:

  1. Read the following article available in the Trident Online Library:

Public attitudes: What’s the use? (2013, Sep 14). The Economist, 408(8853):6.

  1. Describe the relationships between the shift in “humanity’s approach to the natural world” and the “three great intellectual movements of recent times.”
  2. Research an example in your region or an example of interest globally, where biodiversity has been affected in a way that has impacted you or the people nearby. If you use one of the examples in the article, provide additional related articles to dive more deeply into the situation.

SLP Assignment Expectations

USE THE LIBRARY: You will have to use Trident’s Online Library to complete the SLP assignments and many Discussions in this course. You will read articles in The Economist throughout this course. If you have not yet used the online library’s resources, please follow these steps to access The Economist:

  1. From the TLC portal, scroll to the bottom of the page to locate the Online Library.
  2. In the search box enter: The Economist
  3. Click on “The economist” in the search results. It should appear as an eJournal, with Full Text Online. You can either click on the title itself or “Full Text Online,” to access the articles.
  4. Select “Browse Journal for Article”
  5. SCROLL DOWN, Select 2010–2014; then 2013>September>Sep 14, 2013; Vol. 408 (8853)

All of The Economist articles for this course are found in this issue. Select “Special report—Biodiversity: What’s the use?; Public attitudes” for SLP 1.

This should be listed as one of your references in a references section for this assignment. You will have to research using additional sources to complete Part III of your assignment. Include these references in your References section as well. Please use scholarly references such as a peer reviewed journal article or a government-sponsored or university-sponsored website. As you read through your sources, take notes from your sources and then write your paper in your own words, describing what you have learned from your research. Direct quotes should be limited and must be designated by quotation marks. Paraphrased ideas must give credit to the original author, for example (Murray, 2014). Direct copying from “homework help” websites will not receive credit.

Write your answers to Parts II and III in complete sentences in paragraph format.
