THMT 3312 Research Methods for Tourism and Hospitality (16/18)

Applied Assignment #4: T-Test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (72 points)

Complete your answers on this sheet and submit it.

To complete this assignment you must download the Hospitality Consumer Preference Survey and the Hospitality Consumer Preference Survey Data from Moodle. You must also have installed SPSS software on your computer.

Part One: Independent Samples T-Test

Use the Hospitality Consumer Preference Survey and the survey data in SPSS to complete the following questions.

1.            Conduct an Independent Samples T-Test using Gender (categories 1 and 2) as the independent variable and the importance of brand name for brewed coffee as the dependent variable (13Gender x 6eCoffBrand). (9 points)

a.            Is the Levene Test statistically significant? Explain why or why not.

b.            Give the T-Test statistic, df and p-value.

c.             Is the T-Test significant or not?

d.            If the test is significant, explain how the variables act together by examining their means.

e.            Create a proper graph showing the two means and their standard deviations.

2.            Conduct an Independent Samples T-Test using Gender (categories 1 and 2) as the independent variable and the importance of seafood price as the dependent variable (13Gender x 12aSeaPrice). (9 points)

Part Two: Paired Samples T-Test

Use the Hospitality Consumer Preference Survey and the survey data in SPSS to complete the following questions.

3.            Conduct a Paired Samples T-Test using the importance of fibre content and fat content in the breakfast meal (4bBRFat & 4cBRFibre) (8 points)

a.            Give the T-Test statistic, df and p-value.

b.            Is the t-test significant or not? Explain why or why not.

c.             If the test is statistically significant, explain how the variables compare by examining the average scale ratings.

d.            Using Excel, create a proper graph showing the means and standard deviations. (5 points)

4.            Conduct a Paired Samples T-Test using the importance of buying seafood fished in Atlantic Canada and the importance of buying non-farmed (wild) seafood (12bSeaAtl & 12dSeaWild)

(8 points)

e.            Give the T-Test statistic, df and p-value.

f.             Is the t-test significant or not? Explain why or why not.

g.            If the test is statistically significant, explain how the variables compare by examining the average scale ratings.

h.            Using Excel, create a proper graph showing the means and standard deviations. (5 points)

Part Three: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Use the Hospitality Consumer Preference Survey and the survey data in SPSS to complete the following questions.

5.            Conduct Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using Marital Status as the independent variable and the importance of fair trade coffee as the dependent variable. (14Marital x 5cCoffFair) (19points)

a)            Is the Levene test significant or not? Explain why or why not.

b)            Which significance test should you use based on the results of Levene? ANOVA or Brown-Forsyth?

c)            Give the test statistic, df and p-value for the significance test.

d)            Using the test you chose in part c (above) is the result statistically significant or not?

e)            If the test is statistically significant, examine the Duncan test. Which means are significantly different from each other? (5 points)

f)             Using Excel, create a proper graph showing the means and standard deviations. (5 points)

g)            In your own words, using full sentences and language suitable for a non-statistical audience, describe the relationship in the graph. (5 points)

6.            Conduct Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using Income as the independent variable and the importance of geographic origin for wine as the dependent variable. (16lncome x 10cWnGeog) (19 points)

a)            Is the Levene test significant or not?

(5 points)
