1. "The Yellow Wallpaper" is considered a tale with many Gothic elements. Noting that the "Gothic" is a literary genre often characterized by depictions of the supernatural, madness, horror, suspense, etc., what Gothic elements appear in this story? Can you make a case for it being a horror story? 

2. Describe the wallpaper and the narrator's change in reaction to it over the course of the story. Why does she originally dislike it so? In what ways can we see her feelings about it gradually change? What do these changes indicate to us about changes in herself or her mindset? 

 3. Why does the "formless sort of figure" (Gilman) eventually become "like a woman" (Gilman 90) until the narrator is "quite sure it is a woman" (Gilman)? What symbolic parallels might exist between what the narrator sees in the woman in the paper and her own situation? 

 4. Describe the relationship between the narrator and her husband, John, the doctor. How does he treat her? Why does she go along so willingly with his dictates about her treatment? 

 5. What do you think about the sudden use of the name "Jane" in the penultimate (second to last) line of the story? Note that this is the first time that name is used in the story. Who might the narrator be referring to?
