Linking Theory and Practice

Throughout your nursing education, the importance of theoretical foundations has been presented in multiple domains. Soon, you will be using theory to guide change in your practice. Why is theory even necessary? Former Secretary of State George Schultz (a doctorally prepared economist), wrote a song that sums up the importance of theory:

A fact without a theory

Is like a ship without a sail,

Is like a boat without a rudder,

Is like a kite without a tail.

A fact without a figure

Is a tragic final act,

But one thing worse

In this universe

Is a theory without a fact.

Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Theories provide a framework on which to link the evidence. Whether we are looking to write a policy or a nursing standard or make a change in practice to promote patient safety, we look to research (evidence) to guide us in our decision making. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles that demonstrate theoretical foundations (or the relationship between theory and evidence) regarding your capstone topic. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Finally, analyze the feasibility of applying the theory to your population or problem of interest in your current practicum setting.
