·Select a major clinical practice challenge with the students in your small group. Select this small group topic early, so all have time to respond.

·Each student will identify a different nursing theory that applies to this topic and how that theory affects your individualized assessment, targeted intervention, and measurable specific outcomes. At least 2 grand theories (e.g., Orem, Neuman, Johnson, King, Roy, etc.) and 3 middle range nursing theories (e.g., Benner, Pender, Leininger, Mishel, etc.) must be selected. Use the discussion board to state your selected theory ahead of time, AS NO DUPLICATION CAN OCCUR.

·Each student should provide a primary source article in which the theory is described and a current primary research study to support the importance of the major practice challenge.

  For the initial posting, students need to include:

1.    Purpose of the theory, major concepts and relationship statements

1.    Describe the major concepts and relationship statements between concepts that are applicable to this clinical issue and provide a succinct description of the theory (No more than 1000 words for this section).

2.    Include some of the major conceptual and operational definitions and specific linkages of concepts (e.g., relationship statements or propositions).

3.    You don’t need to list all, but only those most applicable to your group topic.

2.    Level of the theory (e.g., grand, middle, or practice)

3.    Evaluation of the usefulness of the theory to your chosen topic.

1.    What are some examples of the theory’s concepts and relationships statements, as it relates to your chosen topic?

2.    Based on the theory’s concepts and statements, what INTERVENTIONS are appropriate to address your clinical challenge?

3.    What will you MEASURE (e.g., theory’s concepts) to know that your interventions worked, and patient outcomes improved?

4.    How applicable was the theory you selected to your clinical challenge?

4.    Each post is to have at least one PRIMARY scholarly reference in correct APA format.

Example of a potential small group topic: 

Self-care management education intervention to reduce blood glucose in male patients between the ages of 18 and 25 who are newly diagnosed with type I diabetes. 

Possible theories to consider for this topic listed directly above.  Students don’t have to select these if others are more appropriate.

1.    Orem – grand theory

2.    Roy – grand theory

3.    Pender – middle range

4.    Leininger – middle range

5.    Mishel – middle range
